mini cd for mandriva?
 

hello ppl i just want to know how to use the mini installation cd so that i can d/l the rest from the net. i specified during installation that i want to d/l from net(http) it then asked me to specify the url os i put in this u"http://mirror.pacific.net.au/linux/Mandrakelinux/official/2005/i586/" but then it said that no package list found!

any idea how i configure that/

Have you tried a different mirror? Having more than one helps sometimes

I had similar problems too, ftp.free.fr solved the problem for me.

so you are using mandriva LE 2005 with kde-3.4.0?
mind sharing with me how you go abt installing it?
i'm having difficulties installing kde-3.4 using thacs.

Hi, I did not do a mini CD install, but rather burned a boot.iso image and chose to do a network install.(I dont know if they are similar, must be).But i did receive the same error you got when trying from another mirror.
I think you have setup your internet right,so try something like
213.228.0.141/mirrors/ftp.mandrake-linux.com/Mandrakelinux/official/2005/i586
for the url.
Do you get url and mandrakelinux directory separately?
If yes, url is 213.228.0.141
and mandrakelinux directory is /mirrors/ftp.mandrake-linux.com/Mandrakelinux/official/2005/i586

As for KDE, you can ¨experiment¨ with thac´s rpms if you have the time.
All I did was setup his site as a urpmi source and check in rpmdrake for kdebase.
it generally throws up two results, copy the file name(for kde 3.4), go to urpmi in konsole and do replace kdebase-xxxxx with the file name of thac´s rpm.
Then use grep to find the remaining 3.3 packages and urpmi those packages(only if you need them all).

thnx for the help, you know what when i tried to do a network install it says DHCP is not found so i have no choice but to d/l all the 3 cds and do a install.

may be yo can list the steps here how i can do a network install/

I too faced problems and a kind soul KrMolot helped me!!!
One advantage with network install is you can exactly choose which packages you want. I´d recommend you to download the bare minimum, and after installation, you can download the rest of the packages.

If you still need help i´d gladly put down a step-by-step account of what I did(maybe after a few hours). I have to go now, have an exam to write!!!

OK here it is as promised :)
(I know you have already performed many of these steps, but it might help somebody else, so I am making it very simple...)

1.Download boot.iso
Burn the image into a cd(as the file is small, you could use an rw).
2.Bootup the CD and choose install
3.Choose FTP installation
4.Choose your internet connection (mine is adsl, so next steps relate to that)
5.Enter your username and password, leave AC name blank.
6.next you are asked for hostname and domain name. Something similar to
" I COULD NOT GUESS HOSTNAME AND DOMAIN NAME; PLEASE FILL IN THIS INFORMATION........................................................................ INTERNET'
appears, leave everything blank here.
7.now a dialog asking for ftp server and mandrake linux directory pops up
here enter 213.228.0.141 (This is for ftp.free.fr, i recommend this as many other mirrors throw up Package list not found)
8.For mandrakelinux directory enter /mirrors/ftp.mandrake-linux.com/Mandrakelinux/devel/2005/i586
9. Leave username, password blank.
10.If everything has gone right the program will load into memory(this may take some time, 40mb file to be d/l´d)
11.You are now presented with the Familiar Mandriva language selection screen
12.After a few more details(like security and keyboard setup) the package lists are downloaded(main, contrib,jpackage).This may also take some time
13.Next up, you choose which packages to install(I´d recommend you to d/l the least you can, for now you can leave out multimedia, office,games etc. even one window manager should do. I say this because, if the connection with the server is reset or your internet disconnects by any chance, you end up having a broken installation and d/l ing everything again is boring.Once you have setup your system, you can download all the above through rpmdrake, now atleast you have a stable OS.Oops, this has become too long. :))
14.Finally installation begins, how long you wait depends on your internet connection.(If you get the odd ¨Unable to download package¨ message,skip the package, write down its name and d/l it through urpmi after your box is set up.)
15.The rest is the routine stuff, admin password, bootloader etc.
16.You are asked to restart and remove installation medium
17.If you are lucky to have come to this step, its time to cheer , you have the latest Mandriva OS setup and ready to go!!!!!!

I have made this as simple and exhaustive as I can. Hope this helps greythorne and others as well.

abattoir one more thing may be you can list the steps you kde-3.4 working. because when i use thacs kde-3.4 rpms, when logging out and then in i could not log in anymore. is there any thing i need to do after installing a new version of kde?

This problem exists also with thac´s RPMs for 10.1 but there, I did
This uninstalls the 10.1 mdkkdm and installs thac´s mdkkdm for KDE 3.4.
When I tried doing this for LE 2005, I could not find thac´s rpm for mdkkdm, maybe it is there now.

If it is not there, you can do
The first one downloads gdm(obviously!!!)if you dont have it. You run gdm in the
second command, you may receive messages saying could not init server in 3 or
something like that. Just ignore them.You now come to login screen, login as normal, go to MCC->System(I think)->Display Manager. Here choose GDM as your default display manager.

You could run XDM instead of GDM, One blackmark with GDM is that you get a grey screen during startup(during kde bootsplash),it annoys me, But the default GDM login screen is way better than the default mdkkdm one.

abattoir sorry to bother to again, one thing to note when i upgrade to kde-3.4 using thacs rpms is that i see a duplicate of menus in most of the applications, like for instance it can be found in konqueror, k3b etc etc.

any idea how to remove that duplications?
