MDK disappointment

Hi,
I purchased MDK 10.1 and updates CD’s. After 4 install attempts my experience with Mandrake 10.1 has not been good. KDE locks up and gives fault # 6 & 11. Modem setup gives an error during the install (it will install after reboot). It will not allow the older files needed by Word Perfect 8 to install. The updates fail during install. There is no "Quick Browser."
I have MDK 9.1 with updates which is working pretty well. But it seems it is like windows newer is not always better.
My question; Is one of the Fedora Core releases with updates comparable to or better than MDK 9.1?

Thanks,
digger

Fedora Core 3 is a good Operating System.

It really all depends on what you want it for. I haven't had any problems with Mandrake, but I also haven't had any problems with FC2, or 3 for that matter. Honestly, on a Desktop machine I run either FC3, or Mepis depending on whatever my mood strikes me. I tend to swich distro's a lot.

Really, from what I can tell, FC3 is a little more stable than Mandrake, with the result of having a few less new packages...the only real major difference (one reason I don't really use it) is FC3 doesn't come with NTFS or Mp3 capabilites out of the box. While that isn't something that is hard to fix, it tends to be the kicker for me (I kinda like those things to work out of the box)

But it all depends on your personal Flavor.. i tried about 15 distros before I found one that I liked enough to use for more than a month.

Why are you looking to change when 9.1 works well for you?

9.2 IMHO

I have used just about every available Distro of Linux since RedHat 7.2 and I can say without any fear of contradiction (ahem) that the most solid distro available is Mandrake 9.2.

It has very good hardware detection and auto-configuration.

eg. found and configured:

HP Deskjet 3420
Radeon 9800SE
Gateway EV700 Monitor
SoundBlaster Live! Sound Card
CD/DVD Burners etc.

As with any Linux distro, a little tweaking of some setting is required to get it working the way you like, and it is *very* handy to have a fresh kernel source installed for building some esoteric drivers (fglrx) etc.

But if you are using very old hardware, eg. SB16 integrated sound or similar, go back to RedHat 9.1 - It supports a lot of old Mobos/chipsets out of the box.

Thats my 2c worth anyways...

I haven't tried any other distro, but perhaps Mandrake just doesn't work with your computer for whatever reasons. Try another distro and hopefully things will work out. That's the great thing about Linux in that it gives you options to try out different things and see what works. Nothing is really the best here, but rather what works for each individual. If all else fails, at least you have Mandrake 9.1!

Good luck!

I'm still sticking with 9.1 on my server although I have 10.1 on my pc. The 9.2 distro started the current trend of losing things I liked, like LinuxConf and quick browser just to mention 2. No I don't think newer is necessarly better. Once 9.1 is running and the desktop is displayed, you can make it look like any version and my server almost never reboots or gets logged off. So the pretty bootup stuff would be wasted on the server.

I had heard that 10.1 was much better. I guess I also like to tinker on my PC.
My HDWE is older. MDK 9.1 Will get the job done for the time being.
I am learning a lot and that's good.

Have a great day,
digger

Different operating systems work for different systems and people for a variety of reasons. I'm not a huge fan of Mandrake, but that's beside the point. If Mandrake doesn't work for you, I would suggest giving Fedora (or any other distro) a try!

I have also heard really good things about Mepis and Ubuntu...the wonders of a Debian base with an installer that doesn't require a PhD (ok, so Debian's isn't that bad... but it can be a pain)

Bleh...

To the original poster:

Error 11's are hardware related and rarely the fault of the software.

Your machine probably has a hardware problem which is tripping things up.

Google for "linux error 11" for more info.

This is not, as suggested a "mandrake" issue.
