MDK 9.2 Good but no screen savers?
 

Just downloaded Linux mandrake 9.2 and installed from burned CD's.
Looks good and much better than 9.1. In fact 9.1 KDE wouldn't load (maybe video driver?), but KDE loads fine now.

However, I noticed that despite the vast quantities of files downloaded (about 2.3 gb which took 21 hours with a DSL connection!) , there seems to be no screensavers included this time nor any desktop picture images. At 9.1 had a few of these. A small point, but am I missing something?

Being a bit of a newbie, any know how to scan the CD's looking for screensavers etc?

PPS: Given the sheer size of the distro, anyone think like I do, that perhaps the distro could consist of just teh essential stuff for an English speaker with a home computer, all on CD-one and the optional extras on the other CD's? Would be nice and leave mirror sites much happier, I think.

What did you install? Just the default packages?

The reason I ask is that I have installed the 3 CD download edition and in KDE I have a few themes (the default ones...same as in 9.1) but I have a few screensavers. You can access them from the KDE Configuration inside "Look and Feel"

You can download lots more screensavers, wallpaper etc. at www.kde-look.org

I believe the file you are looking for is "kdegraphics3" and should be on the CD's .

In "Install Software" (urpmi) search for "screen savers". The distribution comes with 27 screensavers.

HOWEVER, there is a bug that may require you to "update" to fix the bug. This is what I had to do to get the screensavers to work. They showed up in "menudrake", but they did not show up in the "configure desktop" menu.

It would be worth going to "Mandrake Update" and updating. There were several problems that I had that were "fixed" by the update.

tcaptain: I installed everything except the server software and the programming developer's stuff. I had not been able to get KDE in 9.1 to load at all and was trying to get KDE up any way I could. It seems to me that 9.2 is a major improvement over 9.1 even with a few bugs.

Well imho 9.2 is a big improvement...bgoins and rberry88 have good suggestions that should get you those screensavers I think. Personally I always go for a total custom install and individual package selection...if those suggestions above don't work..look for something like "kdeartwork" or "kdemoreartwork" and install those packages.

ln -s /usr/share/applnk/System/ScreenSavers /usr/share/applnk-mdk.hidden/

It worked for me in 9.2rc2 and 9.2 final

Southpark: Thanks for the suggestion. I used your idea and it worked for me too! In 9.2 rc2. There is now a large selection of screen savers in Gnome only three in KDE! One for real, a blank screen and something else that one probably would never use (:-)

I noticed while in root while inspecting the screen savers, that Gnome said that none of them could be previewed in the preview window. However, I could look at them by testing them! However, when I logged on as a regular user, the preview pane worked for most of them.

This might be a minor bug or, as Micro$oft would say, it's a feature.

I have only one obvious problem left. I can't go on line! I am using a DSL connection. With MDK 9.1, installation detected the DSL connection and set it up properly. 9.2 seems to be buggy here. I have tried using the configuration tool and putting in the DNS numbers and still it won't connect.

Is there a tool I can step thru or something to help me?

You had a previous suggestion to install the package" kdeartwork " I think that was the name .. that did it for me..Now I have zillions of screen savers in KDE..OK not zillions but lots of them !!!

I had the same problem with 9.2, at most I had 3 screensavers in KDE. Anyway, I decided KDE was too much eye candy and bloat for me so I uninstalled it and only use Gnome. The thing is, the defalut xscreensavers in Gnome are there and work, but there is a GL screensaver package too. The GL screensavers are really flakey for me, so I uninstalled them. I am not sure if it is the NVIDIA drivers or what. :scratch:

I downloaded the 300megs plus of upgrades for MDK 9.2 rc2 and installed most of them. However, Linux then was very wierd. I tried doing an update from the original installation CD 1 and nothing changed. So I decided to do an original install and try again. I was under the impression that the latter would format the ext2 partition. However, after the installation I could go on line (DSL set up automatically) and a whole bunch of things that didn't load, like Konqueror, are working now. So, with the possible exception of Divine Intervention, I must conclude that the install process sometimes does not wipe out the partition!

Whatever happened, I am so glad. I will still have to make the changes so the screen savers appear, but that works OK.
