I'm new to the world of linux and really keen to get it up and running so
I can finally ditch windows.
so heres the deal, I've got XP installed on C, and another windows drive called D for media etc. theres also about 10 gig or so free unformatted space
Booted from the linux distro CD i got from linux mag, it runs fine Live as far as i can see but the install wont work
I click on the "install now" icon on the desktop, configure the partitions and tell it to install in the blank space, then it takes about 20 mins copying files. once the status bar is filled it will either freeze or just close that window. surely there must be more to it than that?
when i reboot without the DVD it goes straight back into windows, no Grub or Lilo!
what have i been doing wrong? I've tried the install like 10 times now and after its copied those files nothing happens. is it worth me totally wiping the hard drive, trying again so that it has no other choice than to boot into mandriva from the HDD?
OR
is there a way you can save stuff (ie documents, web bookmarks, emails etc) whilst in live, so i can run it live and not have to re-configure it everytime I wanna use it?
thank you for your time reading this, I appreciate any help you have to offer
after pressing F1 it takes me to a command line environment, however not knowing any linux commands I have no idea what to do, the only thing I can do is press enter which then takes me into live.
Is there a way of installing it through this command interface? the icon for installation on the desktop of live doesnt seem to work

Sometimes somethings just don't work, check the documentation both online and on the cd.
OK, not knowing exactly what you are seeing, I'd wait when you get that blank screen, and see if it comes to life or not.
Maybe you've already done that, But I mention it because I've had occasions when it has taken up to 5 minutes to get back to the install process.
Note, that when it's finished, it will tell you, not unlike winxp and others.
It could be having problems writing to the hd,
when in live mode, can you see any of the files the install has written to the harddrive?

Rep:
re partitions
within the live cd you should have drakdisk
(within the mandriva control centre)
or just from a terminal typing su then drakdisk
Alternatively use commercial soft
Anyhow backup in any case
re learning linux
search in LQ bookmark for linux newbie admin and also for rute
also mandriva doc is great (must be in one of the menu)
re saving data, yes create a small partition (say fat if shared with win)
ext3 otherwise
to toy with and save data from generated within the live cd
Though I'd give it a try, the install to hard drive did work ok. I selected the option to install grub to the mbr of /dev/sda. Note: On my box, I have two maxtor sata drives and thus /dev/sda. If you have ide drives, the first drive would likely be /dev/hda.
There were no errors but the grub didn't install to the mbr. If you don't have another Linux system installed as I do, that would cause the system to boot right into Windows just as if the install had failed.
That would seem to be a bug with the Mandriva-One bootloader section.
Putting an entry in the grub.conf of an existing Linux system does allow Mandriva-One to boot normally. From there, I was able to fix the grub using the /boot/grub/install.sh and the command: grub-install /dev/sda.

That seems abit much as my install only uses 1.6 gigs.
