Okay, I'm very new to linux, just switched over about a week ago and I've exhausted all the search engines and online help with no results.

I downloaded and install Mandriva Linux free 2006 on my computer, then I subscribed to the Mandriva Club as a silver member. On the Mandriva updates applet I am getting a service configuration problem error. When I wrote to tech they told me they want me to reactivate my computer. However, when I click on the configure service tab all I get is this error. I have stopped and restarted the service (I think) with the console. I've tried updating it through the console, nothing happens.

I would love some help with this, and please be specific as, like I said earlier, I am very new to Linux.

Is the error called service configuration or something else?

2) Before you can run any updates you need to enter the Mandriva Control Centre. (MCC)...If you use KDE you can get there by
click on KDE (start button position) then system then configuration then Configure your computer.....or open a terminal and type
su (press enter)
your root password (press enter)
mcc

3) Now that you are in MCC
Select software management then click on the RPM icon lower right hand corner not lower left corner

Here you choose ADD button RH side to add a source for the updates
choose Official box and let it search for the closest mirror to your country

where ever MI is ?

Then let it download some stuff may take 5 - 10 minutes then click ok then you are back at software menu and NOW you can click on updates lower left icon

Hi, Thank you for responding to my question.

1) In the lower right hand corner of my desktop there is an orange question mark. When I hover over it, it says Service Configuration Problem. Please check logs and send mail to support@mandriva.......(which I have already tried)

2) I did what you said in step two thru KDE not the terminal.

3) Everything went great until I selected a source to add. (Mirror choosen was US, I live in Michigan) Here is where I got another error:

Unable to add medium, errors reported:
...retrieving failed: curl failed: exited with 9 or signal 0
unable to access first installation medium (no hdlists file found)

I tried several different mirrors listed under the United States, all recieved the same error except the "exited with __ or signal 0" The number would change with each one.

I would appreciate the help, I still haven't figured out what's going on, and I am on the internet. I have cable internet, and vonage through a phone adapter, if that makes a difference.

sheesh I thought you meant the update icon in MCC and not that orange icon in the RH corner.

if its only the orange thingee....I do not use it but you can register and get it to send out your rpm list I think to Mandriva who will send you an email when one or more is out of date.
I do not rely on it.
Instead go to the Mandriva site and subscribe ....for free security emails.....then run mcc to update your software.

2) but once a week I do that in any case as I take images of my partitions with partimage.

sorry have no experience with cable so can not offer any comments.

But I want to be clear on WHAT button you clicked on to add the updates and if you browse that mirror....you MUST see a folder called media_info....otherwise you will fail everytime.

3) if you have the time try my mirror....ignore the country and see if you have luck?

I use this url which you can edit into your link

with a relative path you can paste as
media_info/hdlist.cz

Yes I am aware some prefer http others ftp and I use rsync which is a little longer but a little safer.

make sure the updates button is ticked and to trouble shoot it can be only my link ok?

5) otherwise its the ADD button the third button down ok

Okay I tried what you said but I don't know how to add your mirror.

What I've been doing is going to System,Configuration, Configure your Computer, then select from where software packages are downloaded when updating the system.

Here I have the media manager and I click on Add..., it says This will attempt to install all official sources corresponding to your distribution (Mandriva Linux release 2007.0 (Cooker) for i586).

(This is where I am confused, I downloaded Mandriva Linux-Free 2006 DVD.i586.iso. That is what I installed on my computer.)

Then it says I need to contact the Mandriva website to get the mirror list. Please check that your network is currently running. Is it ok to continue? Y

Please choose the desired mirror

I choose one, and I have tried almost all of them.

I click ok.

Then it says:
Please wait Adding medium
unable to add medium, errors reported:
...retrieving failed:
rsync failed:
exited with 23 or signal 0

and so on.

yeah well that is the problem right there.

updates can only update your version and not the 2007.

(that does not mean you can not add another media source which is the 2007.....but that is not supposed to happen for your 2006)

Can you go into mcc and click on remove software and search for what to remove but don't remove it (just search and quit)

search for the following i have results for mdk choices

wget 1
curl 1
rpm 7

(2) can you go and have a look at the miror where you downloaded from and verify the md5sum

could you download again and do a clean install?

step 1 tick show sources then on step 2 click the sources and choose a mirror close to you

the rest is per sites instructions

Thank you all very much,

I got so frustrated with it, I just said forget it and installed Ubuntu. I know I took the easy way out but I was really frustrated.

So far so good with Ubuntu...wish me luck.

no I won't as 2007 Mandriva is just been released to the public.

I can't wish him luck but do sympathize, I cannot update my Mandriva 2007 and am a bonafide club member. I know that this is a rather new distro and that being the case probably won't have the update situation worked out right away. I will limp along until I can figure out an answer.

oh just seen a message at mandravausers.org that Mdk has big issues with rsynch of mirrors.

It is possible that if you try again maybe tues all should be fixed?
