Mandriva Linux

Some of you may have noticed a message on mandrakeliux.com. It is now Mandriva Linux.

So, what do you think of the new name?

hoarenet 04-07-2005 11:28 AM

I think it is an unfortunate name choice.

It Makes me think of drivel.

I know it's made up of Conectiva and Mandrake but why didn't any one think of something better. It's a bit like the Borland scenario. Borland decided out of the blue that "Inprise" was such a fantastic name and dumped the well known Borland brand name. Well guess what. It didn't mean a thing to all the client base and I suspect many disappeared from their long established client list. I suspect that someone got fired as well.

How about MANDIVA or MANTIVA or MANIVA

How about MANDATIVA or CONMANIVA.

All right. I know it isn't easy but surely someone could have thought of something better.

The name's terrible; very little imagination put into this one. DraKonnect or even MDK Linux might have been better. Still, it's just a name. I mean, Firefox is, in my opinion, a silly name, yet it's still a great browser that's getting more and more popular.

jonr 04-07-2005 12:32 PM

Pitiful choice of name, in my opinion. It's as bad as the awful made-up pseudo-"Latin" names car manufacturers come up with, assuming the buying public will be at best semi-literate.

Ah, well. Now to update my profile...

P. S. What will they now call all those "drak" utilities? Harddriva? Userdriva? Please...

Padma 04-07-2005 12:52 PM

Yeah, the name could have been better. I understand why it is what it is, but still.... :sigh:

jonr 04-07-2005 12:58 PM

I guess if they'd chosen "Connectake" instead, it would have invited further litigation from the Hearst Corporation.*

*In case you're wondering, Mandrakesoft--I mean Mandriva--said one reason for the name change was to end the ongoing lawsuit brought by Hearst. Like, uh-huh, how many people are going to confuse a cartoon magician with a computer operating system? Ah, life...

Micro420 04-07-2005 01:04 PM

I, too, personally do not like the name. They should have just went for Mandricosoft or Mandobe or Mandebian or Mad Hat or Mandapple.

reddazz 04-07-2005 01:07 PM

They could have just left it as Mandrake. Maybe people will warm up to the new name after a while.

jonr 04-07-2005 01:15 PM

I'll probably spend all weekend puzzling out how to change the name on the boot-up splash screen!

Micro420 04-07-2005 01:35 PM

So when do we expect to see the new Mandriva forum on Linuxquestions.org? Will it be a completely NEW forum, or just a name change that will not affect previous posts in the current Mandrake forum?

snecklifter 04-07-2005 03:19 PM

Jeremy is travelling at the moment as far as I understand it but I guess the name will change to Mandriva. Even though it is possibly the biggest pile of pants of a name ever to grace the history of linux distribution names. Its almost as bad as Debian and Red Hat merging and calling themselves Ded Bat. Still, I wish them all the best. Watch out for more distro mergers in the future...

lol, I'll have to remember that one :D

Don't really think the new name is that bad, not the best I guess, it will be hard getting used to in now, took about a month to stop calling my browser firebird :p

I agree, not the best name choice.

But there are some cool things happening--they mention the talk of color scheme changes and the prospect of a new mascot/logo. That's the one thing i never really loved about mandrake was the look on a fresh install. To windows like and the star reminds me of the hardees star. so, maybe that will be a good thing?

Mandrilon

This new name makes me think of "mandrilones" , a realy bad word across Mexico, Central and South America. They do not learn from Sony, and all those famous name that are short, and atractive.

MANDRIVA?????

Changing the colour scheme and creating a new logo? Not something that floats my boat, I prefer to see stuff I can actually use. Considering they are one of the big three distros in personal use I think it'd be nice to see a bit more offered to the community. I'd prefer to see them pursue a red hat style model where you get a community release every few months and an enterprise release based on that every year-18 months. They must sort out their stability issues if they want to get competitive in enterprise.
