Whats the exact error message and in what part of the install process does it happen. There could be several reasons why hdlists are sometimes not found. Firstly your isos could be corrupt, so check that the md5sums are right or try to burn them again at a lower speed. Another problem could be your optical drive not reading the discs properly.
If all the discs are ok and the optical drive works fine, try passing some kernel options at boot up or selecting a different kernel because the Mandriva installer could be having problems with some of your hardware. You do this by pressing F1 when you see the Mandriva boot screen. There is a little help section that tells you what options you can pass to the kernel or which alternative kernels you can choose.
