Wink Mandriva frontend not loading

Hello

I am completely new to Linux and have been reared on DOS since I was little. I've finally made the change and am having some difficulties.

I got Mandriva 2006 put onto a CD for me and have installed it semi-successfully. Whenever I boot into Linux it enters what appears to be Linux's equivalent of the DOS command prompt and asks me for the user name and password. After I provide these it stays in the prompt enviornment (if that is what it is called in Linux). How can I get it to go straight to the pretty GUI i've heard so much about?

Am I doing something fundamentally wrong?

Please bear in mind this is my first time using Linux.

Thanks

Dave

Try

if it starts the gui then update immediately. Unfortunately the 2006 release has a lot of bugs most of them are fixed now but the fixes are not on the install CDs. And uninstall kat as soon as you can.

Thanks

Thanks for the quick reply

I tried what you suggested and it came up with a whole bunch of error messages. I decided to reinstall Mandriva and luckily it worked - I am typing to you from it now.

Thanks for your help. Now to figure out how to upgrade.

Cheers

Upgrade via, "urpmi" in a konsole, thats the monitor icon.

You may need to be root to do so. type in "su" and enter the root password when prompted.

Konsole is your CLI, command line interface.

urpmi --help for info on how to use, or "man urpmi"

The quote marks are not used when typing in.

BTW www.easy-urpmi to setup your database of repositories, google..
