Hello,
I am an absolute newbie to Linux (I have posted this message in the newbie forum; just got one reply that didn't help). Nevertheless I was somehow successful installing mandriva-linux-2005 on my Dell Inspiron 8100. The other day, I de-installed the instant messenger, and installed skype. When I tried to switch on the computer it won't go straight to kde (as it did before, before I un/installed things); it asks me for my local host login and my password. After that this message is being displayed after I typed in startkde:
xsetroot: unable to open display''
/home/anhie/ .kde/env/start-gpg-agent.sh: line 5: /home/anhie/ .gnupg/gpg-agent.conf: No such file or directory
xset: unable to open display
xsetroot: unable to open display
smodmap: unable to open display
startkde: Starting up...
ksplash: cannot connect to x server
kdeinit: Aborting. $DISPLAY is not set.
Warning: connect () failed: : No such file or directory
(gnome-volume-manager:6559): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display
ksmserver: cannot connect to x server
startkde: shutting down...
warning: connect() failed: : No such file or directory
Error: Can't contact kdeinit!
startkde: Running shutdown scripts...
Stop ssh-agent
SSH_AGENT_PID not set, cannot kill agent
Finish stop ssh-agent
startkde: Done.
I was asked to type in startx. Now when I type in startx
This message pops up:

Don't know what to do...every help would be much appreciated...
As root user, use your favorite editor. The file is probably named xorg.conf and is located in /etc/X11. It looks like that mispelling might be the only problem.
An easier way to get the X configuration fixed is to use Mandriva's configuration program to do it automatically. To do this login to the console as root and run the command XFdrake. See this section of the manual for more details: http://doc.mandrivalinux.com/Mandriv...ubleshooting-x
If that doesn't fix the problem it looks like you may have accidentally uninstalled some essential part of KDE or something when uninstalling the instant messenger (which BTW you don't need to do to install another IM type program - multiple programs can happily coexist on the one computer ). To fix this boot from the install CD, select 'Upgrade' as the install type when prompted and go through the install again, without formatting any partitions, and make sure you select the package groups you want, including KDE. You could also achieve the same thing using urpmi or the Mandrake Control Centre GUI by going through and installing any KDE packages you don't have.
