Question mandriva booting problem

when i setup internet connection(adsl) finally it asked in the configure wizard "whether to start the internet connection while booting" linux , i have selected that option . when i restarted , my modem(pppoe) was off and the booting did not take place fully for some time when i switched on the modem at that particular time it continued booting then i understood and i unselected the above mentioned option.when i restarted again with switching off the modem the booting process is not continuing and i also tried switching on the modem but the booting is not continuing.

guys could u please solve me my problem and also tell me about how to boot / login through command line.

my linux- mandriva 2007 spring

If you try to avoid the run-on sentences, it will make it easier for people to help you.

First, the computer should boot up regardless of whether the internet connection is working. We need to fix that first. Please tell us as much as possible about where the boot process gets stuck, error messages, etc.

I'm not sure what you mean by this:
Quote:
boot / login through command line.
. When you see the GRUB menu, you can hit "tab" to stop the countdown, and then "c" to enter the GRUB shell. (If GRUB comes up in graphical mode, you might have to hit "Esc" first.) You can then edit the kernel line--add the word "single" and then boot. This will put you in a terminal mode.

If the modem is off it does take a while for mandriva to boot because it tries a few times to connect. Have you been giving it enough time?

Is the modem installed and working? What type of modem is it? did you need a driver?

If you are seeing a command line prompt when you have booted, type your user name, press enter. Type your password, press enter. You are now logged in. Type startx, press enter to get the gui.

"boot / login through command line." i mean that without logging through graphical mode one can login through command prompt.
i have tried again the problem is solved ,it had booted only when i switched off the modem but it took several minutes. this problem
occurred only when i setup the internet connection, before booting
was done fastly . now i unselected the option "start the connection at boot" the os is working as properly.

and secondly, the boot problem occurred immediately after the GRUB loader when i selected mandriva linux 2007 .

the link shows an image by which u can understand.

@Richie55

my modem is working properly in windows and it is also working in linux the booting problem occurred only due to the option
"start the connection at boot" in new network interface in configure your computer.

If you start linux without the internet connection, it works. Then once in linux if you start the connection does it work?

If so, once you are past grub, does the loading bar go up a little bit then stop? If so, how long have you left it to continue? In linux once it gets to the part of the boot up when it stars the connection, the rest of the boot process will wait until this either times out, or a conection is made, then continue. At this point linux has t initalise your modem, then wait for it to do it, the moden then has to dial out, then sync, then send user name and passoword, wit for a responce for you ISP then letlinux know all is well before it continues. This can take a little while.

In Windows the moden is initalised at about the same point but the connection is not made untill nearly the end of the boot process giving it time to do it's stuff so appeares quicker, linux does not do this as it is designed to be a server an needs the connection beofre servers are started. Hence the delay.

I am assuming you have an ADSL connection.
