Mandriva 2008 and TCL issue
I am fairly disappointed with the mandriva 2008 full install the tcl issue has made mandriva look like a fool. I have been using mandriva stuff sense mandrake 8.1 and mandriva has some real problems. they say well you do not need to use a program because of security problems. Well let me have that control. so as usual I used slackware distro 12,00 source files to fix the problem but to think three full disks of mandriva and not one had the g++ compiler you had to down load it mandriva get a life and compile.

You don't say what you mean by 'the TCL issue'.
g++ is easily available from the official Mandriva repositories: http://wiki.mandriva.com/en/Docs/Bas...oving_software (specifically, http://wiki.mandriva.com/en/Docs/Bas...ions_available ) There's somewhere around 10GB of packages in the official Mandriva repositories. Three CDs is 2.1GB. We just can't fit everything. |
that is wild mandriva has done that 10 gigs wow I am impresesd NOT. The tcl issue is a security issue that you are unable to down load the tcl devel files do to security. Thanks mandriva for telling me what I can and can not have on my computer. and no I paid years ago for a mandrake product and was ok. and I down loaded the free ones but One thing I never do is down load the live. Is'nt that neet you have to have a super fast internet line and pray some one has compiled and tested the rpms. Well when your teaching linux in a country that has no internet and you cant compile because on three disks of mandriva 2008 FREE does not come with the g++ compiler just a cc. then when you want to build a nice Amsn for chat you cant but you try to build it. It is called packaging problems so you spend money on open source software.
So if you want to use any of my software please send me money LOL. NOT. And I will tell you how not to use it. Even though some one else wrote it. I compiled it and now it free. but if you want to use it and have problems then it will cost you. is mandriva stable sure if you are a windows person that loves to have other people make your mind up for you. Have you configured and compiled a kernel with mandriva I have and it is not really that much fun.It has issues but I am sure if you join there club and pay them they will tell you how to do it. oh the kernel was free from LINUS thank you linus and Patrick for keeping it pure. I hope to get the bike done soon Patrick. hack hack. |

Bundle the stuff that has made linux the best for the developer. Thanks to OLPC we have kids 10 years old writing script. and kids as young as 5 writing music. this is a very limited Linux OS with a g++ compiler.Mandriva is a red hat Kock off if you do not think so look at the wrapper. and the source. OLPC was built by redhat people. |

I build, oh, a hundred or so packages a month...check the changelogs for Mandriva. Heck, check the *tcl* changelogs. :)
I don't know what you're talking about with 'security issues'. There is no 'security issue'. g++ and the tcl devel packages are all easily available from any official Mandriva repository. We cannot fit all the packages in Mandriva on any CD / DVD edition. It's just not possible. Just about anyone who wants to build stuff will have an internet connection, and the majority of users do not. Therefore, we do not give development-related stuff priority to be on the disc editions. We have to choose *something* not to put on, and that's the choice. Whatever we choose, it will not be agreed with by someone, that's inevitable. We still have to make the choice. |

That's just...not true. rpmdrake does not have any kind of code that would refuse to let you install a package due to a 'security issue'. You must be misreading it, or have a bad translation, or something.

Drakeo and AdamWill, I've moved your posts to a new thread in the Mandriva forum.
Drakeo, I've used Mandriva since their first ever release and they have never implemented code that would stop anyone from installing a development package (or any other package for that matter) due to security issues. |
I have used Mandriva since Mandrake 6.1 and never had any issue with installing packages due to security reasons. Any time I have had a problem doing an install, it was because of a bad configuration or unsupported hardware. The things you are saying do not match my experience. I am not a Mandriva developer, just a user like most of the folks here. The one thing I can say is that if Mandriva is not what you want, you are free to try other distributions. Linux and the Open Source community are about choice and freedom if they are about anything. Mandriva is a commercial distribution and a company in business to make a profit by providing support to business customers and users who purchase the service. They make their distribution available at no charge to all who wish to use it since the OS is free and they are only selling the support. Since disk space is at a premium, they make decisions as to which packages go into the disk images. If their decisions do not meet with your expectations, that is regrettable, but I do not think they have any obligation to customize their distribution to meet your needs. Linux from scratch is intended for that purpose. Nothing is easy when you do not have a fast Internet connection available, but it has been my experience that the source packages are usually bigger than the binary packages. If I do not sound sympathetic, that is because I am not. You seem to be ranting about something you have no right to be angry about. From where I sit you have a few choices:
First, use Mandriva as it is, and customize it to meet your needs. Next, use a distribution that meets your needs. If either or both of the first two options fail, build a Linux system from scratch, then it will have to meet your needs since you decide which software to include. 'nuf said, |
reddazz: thanks for the move, it was definitely best to separate this somewhat bizarre discussion from the rest of the thread :)

update then get the rpm's need to meet the dependency. Then you will see there is a tcl devel package that I kept getting unable to down load security issue then you go to the tcl change logs and read what's going on. So I did. And if you read the tcl security issue then you would under stand. cool. |
