Yesterday I installed Mandriva 2007 PowerPack with a fresh install on my machine that I've been running 2006 PowerPack for less than a year. I chose not to upgrade because I had some really hacked application installations on 2006 and a few system problems I probably created myself out of ignorance. The 2007 install was very smooth after overcoming the intial screen to choose how I wanted to install. Shutdown and rebooted and everything came up great, had to go back to the CDs to find a Kppp dialer app but that's it. I finally have a complete ALSA sound system ! KB3 could be run by a 3 year old it's that easy ! Two minor problems that I presently have with 2007, first, the fonts in the Firefox browser are ragged on all pages I visit?? Also a problem that was a carry over from my 2006, at www.cnn.com, I can not watch the videos with any player. Players are registered with Firefox and listed in the about: plugins but the videos will still not play.
And finally !!!! Amor is back ! he's running now, he was with me on my first Linux/Gnome install 6 years ago and now I have him back ! It's really Linux for sure now.
Finally got a resolution for the ragged fonts in Firefox with Mandriva 2007. By going to /Edit/Preferences/Content in Firefox I finally chose the LucidaTypwriter font and cleared the box indicating a page to load it's own font. Most all text is clean looking and looks so much better than the default. It took about 6 tries with various fonts that I was familar with before I found the LucidaTypewriter font that works. I'm running 800x600 on a 17" MAG LCD with the onboard AC'97 graphics chip in my Compaq Evo.
if you can download the file on the HD
command
file finlame_cnn
will tell what the file type is.
Also worth trying
mplayer downloaded_finlame_cnn
If you look in the source code of the page and downloable/clickabkle
link you might learn more about it
There is a firefox extension to deal with multimedia content
(not sure it would help here)
Never thought about looking at the source code, I'll do that! The cnn page that opens up when I try to view the videos says "Requires Windows Media Player 9.0" The download button takes you to MS Windows Media site.
Tried to view the source code of the CNN popup window but I can't or don't know how in Firefox other than to use the "view source code" selection from the menu.
What I did notice while viewing the source code of the actual cnn news page was that all the videos had a .vo extension on each file. ??? What's a .vo file ? who does it belong to ? Doesn't sound like anything MS I know of.
BTW,
"There is a firefox extension to deal with multimedia content
(not sure it would help here)" Tried this on Mandriva 2006, it doesn't work.
Distribution: Mandriva mostly, vector 5.1, tried many.Suse gone from HD because bad Novell/Zinblows agreement

more complicated than anticipated
hummm javascript:cnnVideo
a href="javascript:cnnVideo('play','/video/world/2006/11/09/pm.international.weather.cnn
AFAIK mplayer can play Windows Media Player 9.0
provided you install the linux package w32codecs
(have you?)
Now then, I cannot find the javascript itself
nor can I get to /pm.international.weather.cnn
which presumably is the path to a link to the video
(having the txt content of of what is in the file would help)
I do have the Linux Win32 codecs installed. I really haven't tried MPlayer that much, I don't like the controls. I'll keep trying. Thanks for your help !
CNN video looks for a Windows player, I have the win32codecs installed and mplayer installed, but no luck.
I can usually watch CNN videos so long as I have MPlayer, MPlayerplugin, and the codecs. I think CNN just kicks up a message you can ignore.
MSNBC is a different story. It apparently checks for both IE and Windows Media Player.
