mandriva 2007 proxy settings - no proxy.cfg file.
 

hi guys,recently one of my freinds gave me a mandriva box which has mandriva 2007 installed . Not only the OS old but also all the apps are pretty old.Since I am using mandriva for the first time so getting really silly problems like updating it using network in konsole(I have been doing this in ubuntu for 2 years now).I googled and found there is "urpmi" to do such stuffs but I am behind a proxy(in ubuntu a global variable declared in /etc/bash.bashrc like "http_proxy " would do such jobs without any problem) .I googled and found that there is one such file in /etc/urpmi/proxy.cfg to do so but I dont have any proxy.cfg file
How would I enable my proxy preferences without this file?
Please help.

I no longer remember how to configure proxy in MDV 2007, but in 2009.1 (Spring) open MCC (Tools > System Tools > Configure your computer in the menu system), and navigate to the Network & Internet category (right).

I would also like to know how to upgrade mdv 2007 to 2009.1 without deleting current mdv 2007 like some upgrade!

If you have your /home directory on a separate partition from your root (/) partition, you can simply run a clean install of Mandriva Linux 2009.1 (Spring). If your system is set up on a single partition (well a single data partition and a swap partition) you will want to do a little preparation before installing Mandriva Linux 2009.1 (Spring).

Get a live CD (Mandriva One will work for this) and install gparted in the running session. You can use Mandriva's Software Media Source Manager to configure a set of Internet Software Media Sources, then use the Software Package Manager to install gparted. Gparted is a graphical partition manager that is very similar in look and feel to Partition Magic. It can be used to resize partition in a non-destructive manner (the data on a partition is not lost after it is resized). Even so I stronly suggest you back up your data before taking this step in the event that any thing goes wrong.

Run gparted and resize your root partition, then add a second partition behind the root partition on which you will put your /home directory.

After adding the second partition, reboot to your Mandriva 2007 installation.

Open MCC, and go to the partition manager. Set the mount point for the new partition as /home. Click the Mount button in the partition manager to mount the new partition. The partition manager will ask if you want to move the contents of the /home partition to the new partition. It is very important that you answer yes. If you are asked to save the changes to the fstab file when you exit the partition manager, answer yes.


You now should have your /home directory located on a separate partition. You can now safely install Mandriva Linux 2009.1 (Spring) using the Install option (not the upgrade option). When you get to the partitioning section of the installation, choose "use existing partitions". Your /home partition will not be formatted unless you check mark it at the appropriate time. Do NOT check mark it because if you do all the information in your /home directory will be lost!

As an FYI, any software you install to a Mandriva One session running from a CD will be lost when you reboot (or shutdown) because the changes will not be saved to the disk (CD). The Internet Software Media Sources configured above will be lost for the same reason.

The progress dialog keeps popping up in mandriva and covers the whole screen.How to automatic close the process dialog?

Which progress (process?) dialog are you asking about? What are you doing when the dialog pops up? If any one is to be of any help at all, we need to know what you are asking for help with. Thee are more dialogs (in Mandriva Linux alone) than I can enumerate. Please provide more complete information . . .

Whenever I copy/paste something or save any document a progress dialog pops up.Hope that will help.

That is one of the changes in KDE4. Such operations are carried out by a copy / paste plasmoid, and the dialog is the plasmoid's method of providing you information. I do not know of a way to hide the dialog, and I am uncertain that I would want to. On my system, when the operation is finished, the dialog closes automatically and I know it is finished.

You say that it covers the entire screen - on my system, the dialog is a small rectangle in the bottom right corner of my screen (screen resolution is set to 1280x1024 here). If your resolution is different (640x480?), that may be a portion of what is going on . . .

When such a dialog appears, there is a question mark icon in the system tray (main panel) next to the clock. If you are right handed, right click the icon to see if you can access a configuration dialog. Since I have had no trouble with it, I do not know much about it.

If you can not find a resolution, collect as much information about the issue as you can, then make a bug report on the KDE bug tracking system. You will have to register to make a report, and you should search the existing reports to see if your issue has been reported. If it has, add a comment with the information you have collected. If it has not been reported, add a new report.
