I have dual boot windowsxp + mandriva 2007.
on intel 945gccr MB.

I am able ping on the lan from windows but not from
linux.

eth0 is up and modules are loaded.

network card is fine - tested using knoppix.

I am just not able to ping to other systems

on the lan from linux. I wonder why ?

What happens when you run 'ping' for some ip address (that you know for sure it exists) as root? 'ping' shouldn't be able to run as a regular user. If you get an error, post it here.

I do not agree. I can run the ping command as a regular user here with standard security level in Mandriva Linux Free 2007.1 (Spring). I have been able to run ping tests as a regular user since I started using Linux about 1998. I would think performing any test on the network (or Internet connection) would be safer if completed with the authority of a regular user. Making changes to the network (or Internet connection) is a different thing entirely, and should require administrative authority.

Check the settings of your network interface.

Open a command prompt under Windows and run ipconfig /all to see what Windows is using (and works). You might want to copy and paste it into Notepad and then print it for use later..

Get back into linux, and as root run ifconfig then compare the ip address and netmask.

If you have set a static ip, make sure they exist in the same subnet. If a dhcp service is running on your network and windows gets it's ip address etc. from it, try setting your linux box to get it's address via dhcp and restart the network service.
