Mandriva 2007 and Cedega
 

Hi everybody,
I am a Linux user for four years now, and since 2002 when I started with Debian, I went to try other distributions like Red Hat, Fedora, SuSE and recently Ubuntu. But never gave a try to Mandrake which became Mandriva as you all know.
Also the idea of playing Windows games on Linux with Cedega is quite interesting to me, so when I read that Mandriva 2007 will come up with this software, I thought to my self why not give it a try.
But do I have to have an account with Transgaming to be able to play games, or is it included in the contract between Mandriva and Transgaming ?

It`s strange! been using Cedega for a few years now, it`s never been included in Mandrake/Mandriva, neither is it included in the brand new Mandriva 2007, I had to login to my Transgaming account and download the rpm.

Same thing with Skype in Mandriva 2006, it said on the site it came with intergrated Skype, same thing, I had to download skype from skype website.

But I can tell you that Cedega runs perfectly fine in Mandriva

Cedega is not included in the Mandriva 2007 free download edition (because it is not free software), but in the commercial PowerPack edition, which I use. But if you´re only after Cedega, you don´t have to buy Mandriva, just visit http://www.transgaming.org. I think it´s about 5 bucks per month, and they offer binary packages for every bigger linux distribution.

But to be quite honest: don´t expect too much of it. Some older games like e.g. Diablo 2 or Warcraft 3 run perfectly, but it´s the exception of the rule. Most of them run with minor or major flaws, and many - unfortunately a couple of my favorite games like Silent Hunter 3 - don´t run at all.

Sounds to me like Cedega no matter of all the hooeey about it being SO GOOD, is suffering just as WINE did which I could never get too work either.

And which Cedega is built on...

Well, don´t get me wrong: Since I use Cedega it´s been pretty much less often that I boot into XP for gaming. For example Civilization4 is now under Linux no problem anymore, same with World of Warcraft. So cedega definately is an improvement compared to raw Wine, and no question that your better with than without it, however, it´s no option to replace your win partition.

im using powerpack 2007 (as it has cedega) (no windows for, only when wife and kids bust their pcs) but i cant install a game
im trying to install halflife 2 dvd
when i open cedega i click install. tell it to put it in a folder. tell it to use halflife 2.exe but nothing happens
well i do get a folder under flatout on the left hand side but thats it
am i doing something wrong?

Hmm. I've never played Half-Life2 so I don´t have any experience with it. But from what the Games Database says, it should at least do something.

Did you run the system-tests successfully? And when you tried to install, did you select the gddb entry for half-life2 so cedega automatically gets the correct game-settings? Also, it could help to launch cedega from the commandline in order to get some error messages.

Hello there,

well to get your cedega key u need to register at mandrivaclub with mandriva key that is on the manual if you buyed a original copy. Then just ask for a moderator to give u a cedega key. that's it.

Hmmm it's jut like me then do you have your GL libs? try the glxinfo or the glxgears comand just to see something because i've got a problem with openGL... and that doesn't make work cedega well on my computer...

Yes while this is "TRUE" if you buy a Out of the Box Copy.

But if like me you bought the download Version.
Unless you download the Manual as well, You wouldn't know this?

And then all the download Manual tells you to do is look on your box that the OS came in, to find out what to do about Cedega.
Fat lot of good this does ya if you don't have a box.

Then you still don't get it when you download the OS or in an Email, You have to ask for it.

I still wouldn't know about it.

Your key will be good for 90days of updates.

Now for a question, if after the 90 days without subscribing to Cedega.
And you have to "format" Will you still be able to use the Cedega that came with your Boxed or Download Version?
Or will you be Dead in the Water?

I never could find this one out.

Well you will not die but u can burn the cedega rpm and files on a cd and when u format make to reinstall cedega normaly and just past the files like the update packages and config folder... you will be able to play the games that are configured to this packages *.pkg ...you ll not get updates from transgaming...

are you able to lanch the install normaly or not??? if yes have no clue then...

I also downloaded off of Cedega Site the Cedega Small frontend pkg as well.
Just incase U might want to use a Mandriva One download OS.
Instead of the Ones U might buy from them.
Incase U might be a little short on funds at the time.

The .rpm installer are a cinch Compared to others, But thats besides the point.

When you say pass the Update .pkgs which is easy enough to do once Cedega Small is installed, throught the TransGaming interface.

And you also mentioned the .config folder.
I take it you would just Copy/Paste that over the one already there?
Or is the .config folder automatically done once you run the update .pkgs?

And should I copy any of the other files that have to do with the Cedega install as well?

I take it you don't have to worry about the Games you may or maynot have installed at the time?

Just the Cedega install?
