Mandriva 2006 RC2 is out!

Read about it and get it here:

:D

I've been using it all day. It's a more polished product at this stage than my boxed copy of SuSE 9.3 was. Very impressive and IMHO will make Madriva the #1 desktop distro.

talking about the rc2, tell me something that is not written in the review ? how is the performance of xorg 6.9.2 which is the latest one out there ? how about xcompmgr and transset ? is it less buggier ?

Crito 09-20-2005 11:51 PM

only bugs I've found thus far are with my Logitech DiNovo wireless keyboard/keypad/mouse (RF version, not bluetooth) and Hauppauge TV card.

DiNovo RF mouse seems to be detected incorrectly, but easily fixed by setting protocol to "auto" and zaxismapping to "4 5" in xorg.conf. And TV card config tool in Mandriva Control Center always fails after channel scan. I'm using a pretty run of the mill bt878 Hauppauge card too. Anyway, haven't found a solution to TV prob yet.

I was able to install Mandriva RC2 on my Dell Inspiron 600m laptop. I uninstalled it in 5-minutes. :(

I right-clicked the "kicker" (taskbar) to enlarge it. I like it BIG! When I right-click it, KDE opens up a blank window. LOL
I'll wait for the final version.

Mandriva 2006 works very well. Some packages could not be installed due dependencies, but maybe soon it will be possible. Can't find urpmi sources to 2006,but I use sources to 2005.

I played with 2006 rc2 for a while. I'm glad they got rid of the mad penguin.

Ndiswrapper worked right out of the box for me, all I had to do is install it in Mandriva Control center. I wonder why it doesn' t come preinstalled? There is another distribution that comes with ndiswrapper already installed and several drivers already loaded. I think the distribution was either Ubuntoo or Mephis.

I liked the ICON zooming like the Macs have and the 2006 just has a box comming up saying what the program name is. I guess I'm being too Pickey on that though.

It looks like a pretty solid installation so far. I was pretty impressed with le2005, so if it much better I'll be happy.

When the final version comes out I'll probably install it on all three computers..

This looks pretty sweet. I'm getting sick of SUSE (too easy to mess up) so I think I'll give it a try. Does anyone know the release date for the final? Also, how does their numbering system work? I see 10.1 Official under the product page, but I also see Limited Editon 2005/2006. What does it mean?

I think I'll wait for the final version. A OS is just a too important thing to use betas ^^

In fact I like to upgrade my system without reinstalling it. It was very nice to update my KDE to 4.2 with out a reinstall =)

I think it was predicted to be in November, but they may wait more. It would be very nice if they waited a little to see it Open Office 2.0 comes =)

There was Mandrake 10.1

Then they launched Limited Edition 2005 = 10.2

I think that Limited Edition 2006 = 10.3

but I am not sure...

If you are using a testing release you use the cooker sources.

i had that problem too and a couple of other problems like, sound didn't work, couldnt find ALSA, couldnt find my cd/floppy/external HDD, ... looked like some parts of LE2005 still were there even tho i formated hda1, so... i used a windows 2000 cd to delete all the partitions, format my whole HDD to NTFS, and then i formated it back to EXT3 with mandriva :)
then i installed it and it worked nice... pretty wierd, eh?

eka 09-28-2005 06:13 PM

Thanks reddazz I find what I need on one of the mirrors of Mandriva.
Still can't install transcode.Computer freezes while installing libXOrg...... but this is not a big problem.

Can you post some screenshots?

Messed colors

I am using 2006 rc2 with ATI Radeon 9200SE 128MB video card.
Other than a problem with the colors, on first boot, the system seems great.
I have icons that are a kind of translucent green but onmouseover return to normal.
Anyone had the problem?

Sargan 10-02-2005 06:34 AM

I used the 2006 rc2 for a few days but it just locked up on me all the time, it was really random aswell, I could have it running for an hour and no crash but then if I surf the net for 10 minutes it could lock up OR I could just have it at desktop and 15 minutes later *BAM*...
