I finally decided (and had time) to upgrade from 9.1 to 2006 LE. On the advice of others here i did a clean install, just copied all important files to my windows drive and used/formatted the existing partions. My system is nothing fancy and im only running it as a desktop. My specs are p4 1.4ghz, 384 mb ram, nvidia geforce2 ultra, dvd-rw and cd-rw (both lite on). From start to finish the install took about 25 minutes and everything was detected correctly. I was amazed that i could have a fully funtional desktop with multimedia, office and web application all installed so quickly. I didnt have to edit a single script after the install and everything just works. kudos mandriva! I shouldnt have waited so long to install it. The only things i had to do was remove kat, download some video codecs. I cant say enough good things about mandriva. Thanks for your help here at linuxquestions!
How do you get the powerpack? that is not the same as the free version right? what is the difference?
Its not the same as the free version. It has commercial packages, official graphics drivers plus other extra software. You can only get it if you are a Mandriva Club member or you buy it from the shops.
While reddazz is correct (as usual ), I should point out that the Free version can be easily brought to the same level as the Powerpack version, by using EasyUrpmi (see the link in my sig). All the non-commercial/proprietary packages that the powerpack edition uses are available there. For some things, e.g. video drivers, you still have to go to their site and download the drivers and manually install them. So setting *everything* up is not as easy as with the powerpack version. Oh, and you don't get the club *special* software with the free version, either (unless you join the Club).

I bought it, i figured i had been using mandrake/mandriva for free for a few years i would buy the powerpack. Its nice having everything (video drivers etc) in one package.
