By the way Kat is an indexing service that runs in the background and when done makes finding files easier. I hav'nt let it run out but it uses a set amount of your resources and you can change that. It comes up in the tray as a cat icon-right click on that.
yeh i havr this once, each time i install either mandriva or pclinux os, it only happens the ocne thouhg, i dotn know if its kat as i say it happens on pclinuxos, it totaly kilsl the system though, took me quatre of an hour to get to kdm.
If you are sure its not kat, then run "top" and monitor which apps are using up the most ram. There could be an app using a lot of ram resulting in lots of activity in your swap file.
Open Ksysguard and click on the process table tab. You will quickly see what the offending program is. Don't be surprised if it is Lisa. I had this problem on one of my computers and it slowly brings the computer to a standstill.
I couldn't track down the problem, however when I disabled the SATA controller module it stopped (naturally). I think it had something to do with the APIC for my motherboard (Asus p5gd2) I installed Fedora 4 with noapic and its working great now.
