Mandriva 2006 boots to CLI after updating to KDE 3.5.2

After following the instructions on http://www.linuxfordummies.org/index.php?topic=302.0
I managed to update KDE to 3.5.2. However, my laptop only boots to the CLI. If I use the command "kde" or "startx", everything loads with no problems.

I read around the web for possible reasons why this might be happening. One suggestion was that I needed to update my NVidia graphics drivers.. which I did, using the rpms from SoS. the drivers updated successfully and they load with no problems, but still Mandriva boots to CLI.

* I verified that the runlevel is "5" (If I press "Esc" during the boot process, there is a line that says "Entering runlevel 5")
* I verified that the NVidia driver loads properly (If I use "startx" I see the NVidia logo briefly)
* I also tried using the "nv" driver instead of the "nvidia" driver but still the same thing
* I used XFDrake to make sure that Madriva "Sets the graphical environment to load at boot"

Still I get the same thing.

everytime I manually load the GUI... the graphics are beautiful and I get no errors.

Please help me. Am I missing something?

Check in the control center (MCC) under services, to see if "dm" is checked to load at boot time.

The mcc is where you can configure your hardware, it has lots of other sections, like software manager, boot options and networking etc.

Thanx a lot for your reply!

dm is checked to load at boot.
I also saw in another thread that kdm may not be installed so I did
Code:
urpmi kdebase-kdm
And I got "Package(s) already installed"

You might be best to post in the Hawkwind forum,

http://www.linuxfordummies.org/index.php?topic=509.0

http://www.linuxfordummies.org/index.php?board=47.0

they will be more upto date with what the specifics are.

I tried to upgrade to kde3.5 back in the beginning of the year and had so many probs that I went back to 3.4.2

The forum there is good, but I feel that This is basically "cooker" teritory. The bleeding edge, so to speak.

And even though it looks great with all the improvements, it may not be appropriate for all systems and installs.

Not to take anything away from the project, they are doing a fantastic job. Only that Mandriva may not be up to the same level at the same time.

Keep googling and searching these pages, kde is across the board so there are ppl with other distros who are using it too.

Good Luck.

Thanx again!

At the moment, I use linux to learn and keep myself up to date, so I hope I'll be able to fix this even though I don't mind doin a fresh install.

Hi All

Just to let you all know, I managed to fix the problem by installing a new Display Manager(dm). After installing Mandriva Display Manager(mdkkdm) and setting it as the default dm, Voila! I now have a much better login screen.

Thanx for all your help

a footnote

I've just come across this thread. When I had a similar problem, I found the solution in the "Boot" section of Mandriva Control Centre. The subsection "Enable autologin..." has an option "Launch the graphical environment ..." which I selected together with "No, I do not want autologin". That got me the dm which I'd lost.

In the course of trying to solve that problem, I installed the Mandriva LDM. In the light of your recommendation, I'll now try it instead of kdm.

I have also faced the same problem. Try this I think this will work. This worked for me.

type this as root.( this will install more than 100mb)

urpmi kde

if this does not work then try this as root.

urmpi kdebase

before trying this you should have add all sites of SoS and official sites to urpmi.
