Introduction to Linux - A Hands on Guide
This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

Hi. I have a few problems with Mandriva 2006.0. I did a clean install, but had an error with kde libs. I carried on, anyway, but it wouldn't allow me to start K.D.E. at the log-in screen. It would always return me to the log-in instead of starting K.D.E. I tried installing Mandrake 10.1 and then installing Mandriva 2006 as an update, and that mostly works, but here are the problems:
I don't have a proper Mandriva log-in screen - there's no option for the session type or to shut down. I only have the log-in dialogue (even that doesn't function properly - it will not display the log-in details that I type).
I can log in to K.D.E., but there are no options for shut down or restart when I click on 'log out'. I only have 'log out', which takes me back to the log-in screen (see above).
I have tried to install the kde libs via the package installer, but I get the message:
'kde libs conflicts with Mandriva-create-kde-mdk-menu-2006-2mdk.noarch'
It also says something about bad signatures.
Is anyone able to help? Those are the main problems that I have so far. I need the Mandriva and K.D.E. log-in/-out screen and the kde libs. The K.D.E. version is 3.4. Please, someone rescue me!
p.s. Sorry, I accidentally typed K.D.E. 3.5 in the subject header, but it's 3.4.
I'm on a dial-up, so that'd take years to complete! I downloaded the kdelibs-common .rpm and installed it. That passed without problems. I still have no shut down or restart options, though. Do you know which kde package that part comes from? I am hoping to download only the part of K.D.E. that I need in order to get the log-in/-out working. The problem is that I'm not sure if it is a K.D.E. package or a Mandriva one. Neither the Mandriva nor K.D.E. log-in/-out screens are working properly. I still have to shut down Linux via the power button on my P.C.
Also as an aside the upgrade in Mandriva 2006 doesn't do it cleanly from my experience .
It sounds like you might simply have a dirty disk . I think it would be better to get a full install without errors as a clean first start point.
The disk could be faulty too but I have found the disks sold with the magazines usually have a fine line on them from compression of the packaging.
