2005 LE (10.2) - Starting ALSA Prob

Hi,

I'm a newbie and I'm having a bit of trouble with my new install.

I installed Mandriva (2005 Limited Edition V 10.2) and it loaded to the comand line ok and all was well.

When I rebooted later on the startup states that the system seems to have been "shut down uncleanly" so it goes through its checks and all are ok exept when I get to "Starting ALSA version 1.0.8: intel8x0".

This is where the system stops and i have no control. I can still type as if I was in the command line but it returns no info.

I have tried formatting the disc and reinstalling but I still get the same problem :(

Does anyone have any suggestions or a solution to my problem?

I suppose your sound system is embedded in your motherboard, so I suggest first to check on BIOS setup if sound chips are enabled. If you otherwise have a soundcard installed, please uninstall it and then reinstall after a few minutes. Pay attention
to unplug mains cord before opening the PC case and removing it, as many modern motherboards don't shut down completely.
Then try to re-install again, choosing manually the formatting and partitioning of the disk. Should it crash again, I'll try another
clean installation after disabling sound chips on BIOS or uninstalling the soundcard, to avoid ALSA module loading.

Alberto

Hi Alberto

Thank for your suggestions. I did a clean install yesterday but I opted to go with the 64 bit version.

I am now able to boot to the command line sucessfully. I just have to configure my NVidia graphics card to be able to run startx but I haven't got around to that yet :(

Please pay attention that Nvidia drivers aren't embedded in the download version, if you use that, due to the fact they are proprietary software. I use ATI, and had no problem. Moreover I'm very sorry but xwindows setting is out of my knowledge,
I think you'd make another post aimed to Nvidia users.
Cheers
Alberto

Hi again,

I've downloaded the latest NVidia Drivers from their site.

A friend from work talked me through configuring my monitor and graphics card to get onto the startx.

I've tested everything and its now working fine.

I just need to update the kernel and install the full drivers for my graphics card.

Will do that on my next day off work.

Thanks again for your advice.

There is a sticky thread in this forum that is about nvidia drivers (News: Major Headaches with Mandrake 9.0 and Nvidia Card). You may wanna read it.
