Mandriva's Kernel
 

Has anyone tried to recompile Mandriva's Kernel-2.6.12? I have huge problems!!! It crashes in the next five minutes in any GUI I use. I have no ideea why, but in the next 5 minutes the GUI starts, it crashes. No Allert, no nothin'. But the S.O. does not respond to anything (keyb / mouse). The only chance to reboot is hardware.

I have a guess there might be smth from the kernel, and I want to try recompile it. Any advices?

I havn't read of anyone "having to recompile" to get up and running. I would think more along the lines of it being a GUI issue. If you go to run level 3 does it have the same issues? How about memory useage? Is Kat sucking them all up? Just a few thoughts. There are times when a recompile is needed but they are getting fewer and fewer and I bet that this isn't one.

1st of all, Mandriva starts in runlevel 5 by default, that being the runlevel for X server. Donno why.

10x for the tips u gave me, though everything is OK, except that in every runlevel I am, if I start the X server and launch any of the GUI's, is crashes right after I launch any application in it.

HI Hedon,. I just installed 2006 today and am having the same problem with the lockups after a short time. I was told today that if I was running a P4 with hyper-threading that 2006 wants to load the SMP kernel and that that was the problem. He said to change the kernel I guess to one that isn't for duel processors. I'm too new to know what all that means, but maybe someone can give a hand in what and how to do it. Not sure if thats your problem but maybe check it out. Good luck with yours.

Hedon I just wanted to let you know that I went ahead and installed the non-smp kernel and it has been running just great every since. Must of been, at least ,my problem. Hope you satisfy yours.

Nothing resolved yet... 1st of all I don't have Pentium procesor, I have AMD 2400+. I fount out later that SMP is for Pentium, so I'm stuck with the same ****ing problem. And no solution.

SMP is not only for pentium. It's for any Dual Processor, Dual Core Processor. I'm running an AMD 64 X2 3800+ dual core, and I use the SMP kernel. Sometimes, like when a processor has Hyper Threading, Mandriva wil mistake it for having multiple physical cores. But this doesn't work, as the hyperthreading confuses the kernel even more, resulting in a lockup after a short time.

Since you're using an AMD 64 2400+ then you should be running the plain 64-bit kernel. As was said before, you shouldn't need to compile the kernel to just get up and running. If you've recompiled the kernel just to add modules or any other reason, then it would think that you did not compile it correctly or your modifications were not correct.

That's the problem. No error no nothing. Everything crashes... It's ****ing obivious that it's because of the kernel. I've downloaded another kernel (newer) and will try to install that one.

It wasn't ment to make u feel bad... It was for me more, because I've discovered the problem for about a month & I still can't fix it.

I'm trying different kernels now and it still doesn't wanna work.
