It did not work for me. I usually use knoppix at work (the M$ install here is really buggy, my boss does not even know), so I downloaded both the mandrake and the pclinux ISOs yesterday. Both of them load linux, but fail to make it past the cd rom hardware detection. At first I thought it was a problem with the burn of the iso, but when the second disc failed at the same point (both md5s ok), and the fact that the pclinux version is based on mandrake, and the fact that I have an LG cd rom (ok, maybe not the last point, but it is LG) makes me think it is a bug in the HW detection. I will try at home later today.

I was really looking forward to the pclinux option to use a USB ram disk as your home directory, this is almost what I do by hand with knoppix.

PS It is working, I had to disable APIC in the bios to get it to load the cdrom module. It seems a bit slower to load than knoppix, but now that it is up, it is quite nice. I am using the pclinux version right now.

Also note that there seems to have been a problem with the first iso of MandrakeMove. There is a message about this and MandrakeMove on www.pclinuxonline.com. If you have problems, maybe you have the older iso.

As I mentioned above, it seems to take forever to boot, but it is great once it is up.

what I am wondering is if this is actually used regularly and professionally?

What is the practical use of these things. I personally think that the ability to tweak and adjust is one of the greatest advantages a linux system has, and cannot be the matter on a 'on-the-fly'-distro, or can it?

Most BIOS' now-a-days have the option to boot off a USB device. Woud have been even better if the entire distro was on a flash pen drive. CF prices have come down quite a bit and there's even a European manufacturer of the chips (Dane-Elec).

Thumbs up mandrakemove

mainly thumbs up. i like it. i like it a LOT. i can take a linux port with me and run it on the machines anywhere i go, instead of doing an install... and STILL GET GUI!!! [i could do it off a slackware, but command line only].

my only reservations are the slow running. the system seems very sluggish. then again, everything is being funneled off the cdrom, thrown into memory, and continually updated from the cdrom... its a much slower process [comparitively] than loading everything in a traditional install. but it is good thing.

i really hope this distro catches on with people uncertain about linux. i like 'her' so much, i plan on having her meet my parents over xmas break.. heh heh.
