Mandrake has typically been a platform for various user levels. Its a great begining distro, more recomended then any other I see. Personally I would say newbiee to intermediate, and some advanced users.

Mandrake is best when your using in a family situation. Advance for those who like to tinker with the Os and those who just want to get work done without the fuss and for the kids. My 4 & 6 yr old both know how to use it. Both have played in WinXp. When they had their choice of which system to play on (Xp & Linuxes having the same amount of games) They prefer Linux over Xp every time.

I think its more dependent on how you want to set it up. I know that lots of Slack and Gentoo users will swear by their distros for servers. But the rpm based distros are easier to keep up to date IMHO. I have set up both Slackware servers and Mandrake. They both perform well. If you set up a MINIMAL install of Mandrake, it works quite well for a server.

As for a desktop mandrake is by far the easiest to setup. Slackware 9.1 is almost as easy but the Slack community is less in number and hence some software can be a pain(dependencies) to get running.

You know, that is very true man, and that is the problem with newbies trying to get settled in. Everyone has their own opinion that is really just hearsay from some debian geek who only uses debian to be cool. Linux is free, and we shouldn't bring close minds to linux. Almost all distro's are the same since you can compile them to any which way of your liking. My mandrake desktop ran for 50+ days without a hiccup or a program crash, it only ended because of the black out. Linux isn't windows and newbies need to understand that.

as for the thread starter: check out an article I wrote
