Mandrake install halts at grep

I'm trying to install Mandrake 9.1 Traditional Chinese on a slightly old machine (350 MHz, 256 MB RAM). I can get as far as the beginning of the package installation, when it says it's determining how long grep will take to install. It makes no progress after 25 minutes. The pointer is responsive -- it will move -- but clicking the "cancel" and "details" buttons does nothing.

I've successfully installed Mandrake 9.1 English on my other machine (1.6 GHz, 1 GB RAM) with almost no problems. I don't think I'm a complete idiot, but it's hard to be sure. :)

Anyone have any ideas what's happening? Thanks in advance for any help you can give...

see first if you can get it installed without traditional chinese. if you can, you can try add chinese support later.

Wow, thanks for the fast reply! :)

I just tried installing the English version on a different partition. It went much more smoothly, but several packages (or I think that's what they are -- I'm very much a newbie) gave me error messages, among them grep. Then, after about fifteen minutes of installing, the installer hung and, just like before, sat there. This time, I tried the normal installer (<enter> instead of <f1> at the boot-up prompt), so I could tell it had hung because the ads for Mandrake products stopped rotating. It doesn't seem to be a language problem. Any other ideas?

And again, thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Oh, crap, I also forgot -- I've gotten Knoppix to run on this machine (the old one) with almost no problem. If that helps.
