Whilst it's doubtful that I'd be able to help, is it possible for you to provide a little more detail about your problem for others to see..

What is the make & model of your sound card?

What sympotoms are you getting (beside silence!) i.e. When you start KDE do you see any warning messages? (assuming you're using KDE, of course)

go here http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Sound-HOWTO/x96.html

look for your card and/or chipset (if known). If it isn't there it may not be officially supported for one reason or another.

For instance, yesterday I was going to buy one of two cards from Creative Labs: the Soundblaster Live! or the Audigy. Using the above site I saw that the more expensive Audigy card was NOT supported. Too bad, 'cause that was the one I wanted more, but I avoided an expensive mistake.

I hope your card is listed. If it is not I hope you are a profficient programmer.

Watch out for the Audigy!!! I payed lots of money for that POS! It clugs the PCI bus so you get strange noises (like crackling) and it's a hardware bug. So much for a driver fix...
For example, I was using Cool edit pro 2.0 to record a file played on cakewalk and I would get this annoying crackles which pretty much killed anything I could record. Better get a terratec or something like that.

You're not the only one sounding warnings for the Audigy. After I placed my order for the Soundblaster Live! I did a little Googling and discovered that there were a lot of unhappy Audigy owners out there. It doesn't help that Creative Labs has apparently stopped all support for the Audigy card too. Definately a BAD CHOICE!
