I just downloaded Mandrake CD-1 and I was wondering since it says at the bottom of the download page only 1st CD needed the rest optional. What is included in the first, second and third CDs? Contents if you will.
Mainly I want to know what's in the 2nd CD.
Distribution: Mac OS X Leopard 10.6.2, Windows 2003 Server/Vista/7/XP/2000/NT/98, Ubuntux64, CentOS4.8/5.4

I don't know specifically, but if I were you, go and download CD's 2 and 3. I know that when I need to install something important, it tells me to pop in CD 2 and/or 3.
I guess you could get around this if you downloaded your own dependencies and what-not off of websites, but it's a hassle searching through websites for something when it's already all packed into the CD's!
Hmm, ok thanks but doesnt the 3rd CD contain languages only(i18n)? Because all I need is the default English U.S. no need to download another CD for languages I dont use . Oh and I checked CD 1 with MD5sum and it failed ... Let's try again Oh and i'll download CD 2 right after this time.
cd3 contains a lot more than languages. it's really mislabelled. It is possible to set up mandrake with only one CD and do the rest by downloading using rpmdrake if you have the bandwidth to quickly download whatever is needed. Rpmdrake is a great tool for this since it takes care of dependencies once you've set it up right.
I took the liberty of putting a list of all files of the third Mandrake 9.2 CD on geocites,
you can decide if you want or need it. I would recommed that you get it.
Thanks a lot happy that you helped . So I can install with the first CD but with the RPMDrake I can download only the packages I need right, and theyre going to be the latest ones?
And thanks for linking the site and listing it.
I only need a few applications/packages I'm not planning on setting up a server so i only need stuff like email mozilla gaim etc.
*edit: Says CD3 has true type fonts, can I download that on RPMDrake?
Well, if you are going to install with only CD1 then, when it comes time to choose the programs that you want, you should uncheck everything except "KDE" this is Mandrake's default "Desktop". This is to prevent the installer for asking you to "insert the next CD" and then stopping the install when you hit "cancel" (it happend to me, but it shouldn't).
And, yes you can install everything else from rpmdrake. If you have problems with rpmdrake updating check out Easy Urpmi
Sorry, I forgot to add the list of programs for CD2.
So RPMDrake will run after the installation in the setup before the system starts or when I get into the system?
The answer to that is yes, and yes. But, when the install says "Do you want to look for updates now?" you will say "NO".
Updating requires an internet connection, It's better to update after you make sure your connection is working.
as h3rb1 says, don't do the update after the install. Once you have mandrake up and running, go to http://urpmi.org/easyurpmi/index.php
and set up urpmi (rpmdrake is a graphical front end to urpmi) for 9.2 with Core Distribution which is what is on the CDs). Just follow the instructions on the page and you will have rpmdrake setup to download everything you need from the net. The PLF is nice for extras that are not on the CDs.
Can I install something like mozilla or an internet browser off CD1 to check if my internet works so that I can go to that site?
I downloaded CD1 again checksum didnot match I'm wondering because I'm using a download manager would it mess the checksum? I mean the size seems right.
It's possible that your "download manager" is getting the file from the ftp server in "ASCII" mode, make sure (if the option is available) to download the file in "Binary" mode.
If you have a slow (or not always on) connection you may want to try WS_FTP LE it's a "real" ftp program (for windows) that you can use to download the ISO images, and it can resume the trasfer if the connection is lost. Make sure you select "Educational" and "Personal" when prompted by the WS_FTP installer.
Also, if you are having problems with the md5sum you can see my reply to the thread Booting Mandrakemove It has step-by-step information on how to check the md5sum of the ISO image file. Just replace the name of the image file in the reply, with the one you are working with.
Yes, quatsch is correct on both points
a. You will have to use the konqueror browser (mozilla is in CD2).
b. Try another mirror.
