Question Mandrake Boot Scans For HardDrives Which Arent There?

Hi,

This is my first post on LinuxQuestions.org and i have usually found any answers to my queries but i have run into a problem now that i can't find any advice on.

After installing Mandrake 9.1 on a 40gb Master Dual Boot with Doze 2K i've always noticed that as linux starts up it scans hda which is my 40gb then continues on hdb, hdc, hde, and gets no response status (0xfe) - it poses no real threat to my system but it does hang for a minute or so while scanning.

My box is a:
Abit NF7-S v2.0 nForce2 (Socket A) Motherboard
Abit Geforce 4 ti 4200 (OTES)
512mb RAM
24x DVD-ROM
40gb HD
AMD Athalon "Barton" XP2800+ Processor

Any feedback would be appreciated

k2; mdk is thorough, could it be its working thru bios as it is setup.? check it out. from ur description only have hd and dvd. how are they setup. recheck bios and config of drives. my mdk8.1 checks 2 fdd,2cd/cdrwand hd,then partitions and boots.

Ok upon double checking my bios settings ive found there is nothing in there to indicate as to why the boot would search past hdc.

Please Advise

Ok so much has changed since my first post - After re-checking the BIOS i disabled the floppy drive as tthere is none in the computer. Ive also added another HD an 80gb but thats all NTFS and doesnt need to be touched by linux - the problem of "hde status = (0Xfe)"

Here's teh etc/fstab:

/dev/hda6 / ext3 defaults 1 1
none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0
/dev/hda8 /home ext3 defaults 1 2
none /mnt/cdrom supermount fs=iso9660,dev=/dev/hdc,--,codepage=850,iocharset=iso8859-15,ro,nosuid,umask=0,nodev 0 0
none /mnt/floppy supermount fs=vfat,dev=/dev/fd0,--,codepage=850,iocharset=iso8859-15,nosuid,umask=0,unhide,nodev 0 0
/dev/hda1 /mnt/win_c ntfs iocharset=iso8859-15,ro,umask=0 0 0
/dev/hda5 /mnt/win_d ntfs iocharset=iso8859-15,ro,umask=0 0 0
none /proc proc defaults 0 0
/dev/hda7 swap swap defaults 0 0

Is there anything else needed to aid this problem?
