My old Windows 2000 desktop has been relocated to the workshop and Mandrake 9 installed using CDs acquired many years ago.

The intention is to LAN it to my CNC mill that is running Ubuntu 6.06 LTS with LinuxEMC and to learn about Linux and CNC while re-furbishing the mill.

Longer term is to update everything to the latest LinuxCNC.
This is dependent on being able to install as both computers have only CDs without the option to boot from a USB.

It is currently frustrating trying to use the installed Mandrake documentation while operating the system.

All I need right now is a source for pdf documents that I can load on my tablet that are reasonably close to the Mandrake 9 distribution.

Welcome to LinuxQuestions.

Mandrake was based upon Redhat at the beginning but basically kept the same file structure and configuration files if I remember correctly. The difference was basically the system configuration tools so may not be much help. Installing a more current lightweight version might be easier to use. I assume there is limited RAM.

Mandrake 9 is very old and Mandrake is defunct. I fear you will have great difficulty in easily finding documentation. You might find some useful leads at the LQ Wiki page about Mandriva, as Mandriva was a direct descendant of Mandrake.

If you find Red Hat intriging, take a look at CentOS or Scientific Linux. Both of the are spins of RHEL.

Mageia is a direct descendant of Mandrake. I've been running it on one of my machines for several years. It works quite nicely.

i am guessing that this almost antique computer that is running the c & c mil is windows 98 ( 2000) hardware

with only 64 meg of ram and a very small 20 gig drive
after all this is 16 to 18 year old hardware

Not quite so antiquated, both old but still capable of good work:
- CNC mill with Ubuntu 6.06 is an AMD Athlon at 1.8GHz with 40 GB drive,
- desktop with Mandrake 9 is a Pentium III at 933 MHz with a 160 GB drive.

I have now got a great repository of Red Hat documentation, and I have just found a 4-disc install set of Red Hat 9.
As I cannot find any Mandrake 9 documentation, I am considering changing distributions.

Add 1 GB Ram for the CNC, and 256 MB RAM for the desktop.
