Don't get me wrong: Beyond a couple of snaggies with MDK 9.2 I think it's an excellent distro. Supermount works for the first time on my box :eek: and I still plan on keeping MDK on my box, be it Discovery or Download.

Update: Specifying "mem=1024M" at installation did the trick. I added the Download Edition CDs via the Mandrake Control Center for development RPMs and packages not on the Discovery Edition. Kernel Sources added and things are working nice. The MDK LILO plays nice with Slackware and WinXP (wifey's OS :( ). Life is good.

my initial experience with mdk9.2 wasn't too good.
On my Athlon 1700 Compaq Presario it was buggy and troublesome.
I've just been given an old dell dimension p2/350 and installed mdk9.2
"to see what happened"
and it's running very nicely (if a little slowly)
no crashes yet, all the hardware picked up perfectly, no logout hangs
and so on

I did the upgrade and I preferred the 9.1; the autodetection of
my pen drive worked better, and most important the kernel source
was there in 9.1, while in 9.2 I had problems in find and download,
and rpm is still non installing it perfectly... I wonder if anybodu had this
problem too...

after first install some people are disappointed and right away they start to spam with questions like how,why,where is this,that,but after update and a few configurations they're surprised and WOOW!!!:cool: Mandrake ROCKS!!!!

In addition to points made earlier. I noticed problems mounting and umounting. I usually usually disable supermount, and use kwikdisk. Or do it from a terminal. Sometimes kwikdisk will freeze. Then I noticed that its actually mount that freezing. After this happens the only thing I can do to access the drive again is reboot. During shutdown, you see several errors saying that certain partitions aren't umounting.

FYI, I was using the multimedia kernel from contrib. But as far as I can remember, the other kernels did this too, both updated and not.

I haven't read all of the posts, so forgive me if I repeat what has already been said. I did a clean install, using my existing /usr and /home partitions. Install went well, everything seems to work OK, and it has a much 'crisper' and solid feel to it. However, java no longer worked in Mozilla or Galeon, but that was dealt with by downloading and installing java 1-4-2_02 and linking to Mozilla plug in directory. I do miss the 'quick browser' and the home and konqueror buttons which do not seem to be part of the default install, at least with the download edition. I could not do updates as part of the install. After booting into 9.2, I ran all of the updates, and Mozilla disappeared from the start-networking-www, along with other things (can't remember exactly what now). On balance, not a bad choice and certainly not the buggiest Mandrake release. While Mandrake usually gets it right by .1 or .2, I think I would have been as well off waiting for .3 or 10.1, bypassing 10.0, of course. But then, this is just 1 man's opinion.

MDK 9.2: It's a NO GO
 

I've found MDK 9.2 to be the most untested, unstable distro available today. It crashes constantly.

The updates crash KDE to unrecoverable points where an reinstall of the OS is required.

I wish they would have tested this version better. I reinstalled 9.1, it's stable. Stick with 9.1.

i think part of the problem here is the nvidia 4496-pkg2 file

i'm running 9.2 on 2 machines
one has an ATI chip and is ruinning just fine, and hasn't hung or crashed once (so far)

the other has a g-force2 card in,
i did a basic install with kde, installed the 4496 drivers and straight away the hangs and crashes started
(this would be the third or fourth time i've tried 9.2 and ended up wiping it in favour of the more stable 9.1)
so, after reinstalling 9.2 again
i've gone back to the 4363 src rpm's
rebuilt and installed them
and so far
no crashes or hangs

the 4496 pkg (on my machine) first says "no precompiled something was found for your kernel
do you want to download one?"
i say no, click on ok
then the installer kicks in and it installs anyway

is this ringing any bells with anyone?

salparadise, I don't think the nvidia drivers are the problem. Because you fail to mention that it asks you if you want to compile one. And it does just that. At least thats what mine does.

On another Note, I think my mounting problems were either from disabling supermount or installing either the updates, or the multimedia kernel.

I agree. But what was the time frame between when you installed the driver, and when you installed previously? How much testing was done in between.

Im not trying to argue, but why does mine ask me if I want to compile a module? Do you have the kernel sources installed for your particular kernel? Humm, i just noticed in your other post that you did have rebuilt the older rpms with no trouble. So you have to have the kernel source installed. Humm, Still it strikes me as curious why it doesnt ask you to compile a kernel module.

My 9.2 install didnt crash, but I had those dreadful mount problems and noticed several of the bugs already addressed.

i've had no problems with supermount (other than ut2003 refusing to install)

and since putting the 4363 drivers on
have had none of the logout hangs and crashes that i had previously associated with 9.2

i guess there are a few more bugs than i had realised

SO chuffed to have the hang problem sorted though
