Mandrake 9.2 - Recognition of ttyUSB0

My Thinkpad T20 was stolen, so I replaced it with a Thinkpad R40, which has no serial port. I've got the onboard smartlink modem working a treat, but cannot use my Nokia 6310i via a USB/Serial converter. I had no problem on the T20 with a direct serial port connection.

The USB/Serial converter supports Linux (pl2303 module) and the Nokia is recognized as a modem on either /dev/ttyUSB0 or /dev/ttyUSB1.

Under KPPP (device set to /dev/ttyUSB0 or /dev/ttyUSB1) it dials out, but then "drops" and I get the following message:

QUOTE

localhost pppd[2145]: pppd 2.4.1 started by root, uid 0
localhost pppd[2145]: Terminating on signal 15.
localhost pppd[2145]: Couldn't set tty to PPP discipline:
Interrupted system call
localhost pppd[2145]: tcsetattr: No such device
localhost pppd[2145]: Exit.

UNQUOTE

It doesn't work under wvdial either

The problem seems to be that the /dev/ttyUSB0 or USB1 are not recognized.

I can't ln -s /dev/ttyUSB0 to /dev/modem, because that's already linked to the smartlink device (/dev/ttySL0)

This was reported as Bug 303 and Bug 304 to mandrakesoft by someone in France, but nothing seems to have been resolved.

Any ideas anybody?

Mandrake 9.2 - recognition of tty/USB0

I've found a patch to the usbserial.c file by Olivier Dugeon, which I think may do the trick, but haven't yet had the time to try it. It's on http://synce.sourceforge.net/synce/usb_linux.php.

It's to do with the ipaq module, but it looks as though it is a general correction needed by Mdk before usbserial module will work correctly.

It does work. I'm coupling a Nokia 6310i with a pl2303 USB/serial converter. The Nokia is recognized as a modem (using kppp) and I can access. It's very slow (9600), but that's a function of the phone, so it's not much use for the web. It's OK for emails if there's no hard or wireless connection.

The file I used was usbserial.patch-mandrake-9.2, but it didn't seem to have anything Mandrake specific in it.

Hope you succeed!
