Hello!
I've just signed in this forum because I've a very big problem. I use Mandrake 9.2, but at random time it freezes, completely (soon after GRUB, or during a X session, or during KDE or GNOME starting...).
My hardware is a AMD Athlon 2500+ on a ASUS A7N8X-deluxe motherboard, with 1 GB of RAM 2*512 MB), a ATI RADEON 9200 (128 MB) graphic card, 2 SATA HD (Seagate Barracuda 120 GB), a LG 48x16x DVD-ROM and a Traxdata Sirius 24x10x40x cd-ReWriter.
I tried to recompile kernel to 2.6.1 but the problem persists.
If you can help me... :-)
First off nice system. This sounds like a memory issue. What's the grade of your memory.(Top, middle,or bottom). This type of problems happens more with the bottom grades then the top grades. People always tell what the system spec are but never tell what grade of memory is. So.... check the memory. Their are plenty of memory testers out their. Somebody should know of a good one. If the memory turns out to be good then try changing the video card with a known good one. I've seen the memory on video cards cause the same type of problems. I read an article once about memory and how they grade it, It scared the hell out of me. I've since buy only top grade memory.
My computer is similar, the motherboard is the same and I use the following memory: http://www.ec.kingston.com/ecom/conf...R400X64C25/512
I don't believe it's THAT crappy haha, though my video card is a GeForce 4800Ti 128mb. I'm using the 2.4.22-22mdk kernel and still got a frozen comp on X. Any ideas?
Remember just because it top of the line dosn't mean it can't have gone bad. If every thing new is in perfect condition when made then their would be no such thing as lemons. I've seen Kingston memory go bad it's rare but it dose happen. That why I said run a memory tester. Did you install it? If so were you careful about electrostatic discharge. I've had to change memory out because somebody didn't take precautions and it ruined their brand new memory they just put in themselves.
I have a similar setup - 1GB ram (Crucial) ATI Radeon 9800 (128MB), and the same 'feezing' problem. By the way, SuSE and Red Hat work fine?? I just prefer Mandrake.
I have tried all of the different kernels there is on offer.
I then read about GRUB bootloader having a bug in it whilst reading a Linux From Scratch article. It seems that it tries to force a mem=xxx into the boot process. It should pass mem-nomem (Please don't quote on accuracy of syntax here...)
So, for about the 20th time I have installed Mandrake 9.2 - this time with LILO!!
