Mandrake 9.2 fonts/display problem - Radeon 7000

I have just installed Mandrake 9.2 but seem to have a display problem. When logging in to KDE the fonts are so small they are unreadable. By changing the font sizes to 32 in the KDE Control Panel (both as root and as user), the general interface becomes usable, but some programs - notably Mandrake Control Centre - still seem to display with the miniscule fonts making any adjustments to the system setup nearly impossible. The window text in Konqueror etc. is also way too small (despite increaing it the application settings). In addition, with OpenOffice and KOffice (rich text) applications, the page is displayed several times wider than it is tall, with 3 or 4 cm between individual letters making effective use problematic. This is despite the fact that the page is setup to be A4 portrait. I'm guessing that both of the above are caused by my hardware not interacting well with the XFree86 driver and/or the X Font Server and would appreciate any advice as to how they can be resolved. I've searched the web for solutions but without success, and have tried the ati & vesa drivers - as well as changing the display depth and resolution - but the problems still remain. The font problem is unique to Mandrake 9.2 and KDE, but the OpenOffice/KOffice problem also existed in 9.1. Thank you.

I'm no expert. but I would go thorugh my Xfree log file.. @ /var/log/Xfree.0.log to see if you can see anything unusually..

Post the file. if you can so we can too..

Thanks for your reply.

I've looked through the XFree.log file, but I'm not a Linux expert so don't really know how to interpret the information it provides. I tried to attach the file to this message, but apparently this forum doesn't permit this. I also tried pasting the text into the message, but I can't do that either because it's too long!
If you think you can help, perhaps I can e-mail it to you.

Re: Mandrake 9.2 fonts/display problem - Radeon 7000

i have a compact presario 1.6 ghz, 512 mb, 80 gig hd and a ati rageon 7000

and i had 9.2 rc2 on there and the card worked great, no problems and the fonts were excellent

not a hitch there

just wanted to share that however i did eventually take 9.2 rc2 off for other reasons and replaced it with 9.1, maybe thats on idea...

give 9.2 about six months

Thanks for the suggestion, but like I said in my original post I had the same problem with OpenOffice etc. with 9.1. I may be forced to go back to it though because at least the KDE fonts displayed properly.

My Radeon 7000 AGP 32MB DDR TV-Out Graphics Card (capable of AGP 4x but running at 2X because that's the most I can get from the m/b) is plugged into as Intel SE440BX m/b (100 FSB) which has a Celeron 1.4Ghz processor, 256MB Ram & 30GB ATA133 hard disk (running at ATA100 via a PCI IDE controller card because the onboard IDE only supports ATA33). Maybe this particular hardware combination confuses XFree86 or something....

i feel for you man, but i still think you'd have much better changes using 9.1
