Unhappy Mandrake 8.2: getting error on Apache-2.0.43 install

I am running Linux (Mandrake 8.2) on an Intel PIII (i686-pc-linux-gnu), and am having problems configuring Apache (httpd_2.0.43).
After I extact it to /usr/local/src, I try to run ./configure --prefix=/usr/local/apache2 --enable=module=so , or just ./configure and it returns the same error:
.....
checking for C compiler default output... configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables.
configure failed for srclib/apr
#

And that's it...
I am quite new to Linux, and am desperately trying to setup my first server (Linux, Apache, PHP & MySQL).
Any help would be greatly appreciated - thanks!

what c - compiler are you using?
Any particular reason you are compiling source as opposed to downloading an RPM? There are tons of RPMs available for MDK, why not use them? I have found that Apache 2 isnt really much of a benefit yet. There are less mods, less resources, and less people with experience with it. 1.3.28 may be easier for you to use (that is what I am using), and is better supported and (as mentioned) seems to have more mods easily available.

Thanks Nic! I have no clue what c - compiler I'm using (hahah - way new to this)... I was only following the directions in the back of a self-help book. I'll try the RPM, and stick to the older version.

Thanks again for all of your help..
