Mandrake 10... strike 1

My Mandrake 10 installation just corrupted itself without me doing anything to contribute to it. Really, that sucked a LOT.
I was just using firefox, downloaded and compiled winex. Next time I boot, X wouldn't start properly. The monitor sounded like it was changing resolutions and sent me to the console line. I had to reinstall the whole thing but lost the automatic things like ethernet, automount, etc etc...
I hope they fix this kind of stuff for the retail powerpack or else I'm sticking with my windows XP that at least has never done that to me... sigh

That's too bad.

Next time when you compile and install new software make sure you run
./configure and make as a normal user, and make install only as root.

Edit: Also, you should try make uninstall to remove the offending software.

It is still in beta, give it a chance once it's fully tested and officially released.

Yep, I agree with jhorra. mandy community is really only a glorified beta.
Redeye2, did you try editing xf86config and then startx when you tried to reboot and x wouldn``t start. X can fail to start if the kernel has been modified (especially when trying to enable nvidia drivers and the new kernel won``t run). I know this doesn``t sound like your problem but it sounds as though your xf86config file was modified when you compiled winex.
bad luck though. it does sound as if there may be a problem, because it shouldn``t be rewriting important files like that without you knowing.
I``m sure (hoping) that these sorts of things are being worked on for the official release.
anyway i hope this is the last time it happens to you,

cheers

I'm not dumping mandrake! not at all!! The only thing is that I'm waiting till the official release so I buy and install the powerpack The thing that bothers me is the long wait... I'm sick of just having 1 desktop and not being able to use cool icons hehe
