Mandrake 10 ppdev module will not load

Installed Mandrake 10.0 with all updates. I edited the /etc/modules.conf file by adding the line
"alias /dev/parport0 ppdev" just as I always have on my previous Mandrake installs to have access to my parallel port scanner. For some reason ppdev is not loading. "insmod ppdev" resullts in an error message > no such file or directory.

I've seen a couple of posts that the 2.6 kernel handles modules differently than 2.4 & that with 2.6 "ppdev" is now a "character device". I've always been able to get my scanner to work by installing the sane-backends & editing the dll.conf & umax_pp.conf files.

How do I solve this problem?

use modprobe ppdev instead of insmod... then you may chmod a+rw /dev/parports/0 and the scanner will work.

but problem is still the same - the ppdev written in /etc/modules.conf won't start at boot time so each time i want to scan i have to do this two things. any suggestions how to force ppdev to be started each time system starts?
i'm using up to date mandrake 10 too...

i've just solved this problem in that way:
i made a file which contains:
Code:
#!/bin/bash
modprobe ppdev
chmod a+rw /dev/parports/0
i named it skaner (which means scanner in polish) and put in /etc/init.d with attribute executable.
next i've created symlink to this file in /etc/rc3.d and /etc/rc5.d called S99skaner
so each time system starts, ppdev is loaded. everything works fine. i hope that help at your case to.
