Mandrake 10 on HP?

Hi everyone.

I'm not yet an experienced Linux user but I do have a little experience with Linux. I've used 2 live cd versions that were ok, Damn Small Linux and Flonix which are both based on Knoppix. My boyfriend is going to let me use his old HP pc for Linux. The specs for that pc are:

Pentium processor 400 mhz
64 mb ram
reg cdroom

Would Mandrake 10 work? I also have Mandrake 9 but would prefer to use 10 because I am saving to build a more updated and spacious pc to port it to. Is the HP too old to use Mandrake 10. According to some people, it's not too old for version 10.

Also, when I used DS Linux, it never detected the soundcard in the HP but Flonix would. Do you think Mandrake will detect it? I've heard Mandrake detects more hardware than most distros do in a system.

I'm sorry if this seems rude I've been a bit busy today and don't have much time. I will post an intro post asap Thanks everyone.

Mandrake will run on anything from a Pentium 60MHz upwards (or so the system specs say), so I can't see you having any problems getting it running on that machine.

X will run a little slow, though. I had a 400MHz/192MB computer that almost cried every time I typed in "startx" This was with mandrake 9 and whatever version of kde that came with it.

You may want to see if you can get that up to at least 128MB RAM.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the help I don't plan on using the HP long. I'm going to build an AMD machine that looks like this:

AMD XP 2400+(I think that's about 1.70 ghz)or a 2500+ processor
256mb DDR
40-60 Gig Hd

I've gotta get used to the slower machines again. I use a Winxp 1.80 ghz machine daily but no biggie. At least I'll be using a stable os on it I'm gonna wipe the HP clean of Win 98.

Thanks so much

I just installed MDK 10 on tow HP machines I have here one PIII 500 and one PII 400.

Both installed flawlessly and detected on board sound. It works very very well. I recommend installing all the available desktop managers as, You can then choose speed or beauty so to speak. Yes KDE does run a bit slower than older versions , so I too would recommend an upgrade to 128megs or more.

Enjoy
