Mandrake 10 (club) and NVIDIA driver: display smaller than screen

I upgraded from MDK9.2 to MDK10. Under MDK9.2 I had installed NVIDIA's proprietary driver and had 3d working, etc. Under 10, the default installation worked fine (ie using NV driver), but without 3D. Also, several applications complain "GLX extension missing".

I joined Mandrake Club and tried installing the appropriate NVIDIA and NVIDIA-GLX proprietary rpm's from Mandrake. Now, regardless of what resolution I choose for my screen, only 800x600 of the 1024x768 is actually visible (e.g. if I choose 1024x768, then I can only see part of the desktop).

Also, the installation program from NVIDIA says it will not work on my system.

Has anyone got their "NVIDIA" driver working with MDK10 / Kernel 2.6... ? With Mandrake's rpms?

Mine's working on a fresh install of MDK 10.

Did you install the kernel-sources for 2.6.3?

Still not working

By the way, I actually had the wrong sources installed, maybe: with
kernel-source-2.6.3-7mdk instead of 2.6.3.13, I got the NVIDIA installer to do its thing using:
./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-5336-pkg1.run --add-this-kernel
then run the newly build *custom.run file ...

HOWEVER, now it just gets as far as the Mandrake Club RPM's do: X does not work with the commercial NVIDIA driver. A bit more description: This problem is on a Toshiba Satellite 2410 laptop. There was no problem with Mandrake 9.2. The broken X displays on a subset of the screen a "portal" into the full 1024x768 screen (e.g., it shows only the top left portion of the 1024x768 NVIDIA splash screen, etc), and in fact in GNOME the mouse when held against the edge of the "portal" pans around within the 1024x768 view! If I try to run a program which uses GLX, X dies abruptly and, worse, the keyboard is frozen -- i.e. the system completely freezes and requires violent reboot!!!!

Below is my XF86Config. Below that is my XFree log file.

Thank you very much for any help! I am at my wits' end with this!
Chris

Looks like X is overriding your refresh rate based on info it got back from the monitor. I ran across these two links that suggested disabling EDID because it was messed up for your laptop: Link 1 and Link 2. I should point out this section from the NVIDIA driver readme file
Quote:
Option "IgnoreEDID" "boolean"
Disable probing of EDID (Extended Display Identification
Data) from your monitor. Requested modes are compared
against values gotten from your monitor EDIDs (if any)
during mode validation. Some monitors are known to lie
about their own capabilities. Ignoring the values that
the monitor gives may help get a certain mode validated.
On the other hand, this may be dangerous if you do not
know what you are doing. Default: Use EDIDs.

Option "NoDDC" "boolean"
Synonym for "IgnoreEDID"

Progress on Toshiba Satellite 2410 with Mandrake 10

Thank you!
That indeed solved the display size problem, and I'm sorry for overlooking it.

However, GLX now fails to load, and I still don't understand the log. (If I try glxgears, for example, I get an X crash AND complete freeze-up.)

Below is some of the log:

Yeah, the X log is nasty to look at -- I don't understand most of it myself

Just guessing but the Mandrake installer may have installed the MESA GL libraries. You can remove those with urpme. Also ran across a redhat mailing list post showing that the NVIDIA GLX driver might be conflicting with an older version of itself. I checked my system and this is what I have for libglx.so:
Code:
[mascdman@odin mascdman][ :) ]$ ls -l /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/

still stuck

Thank you again. My symlinks look the same as yours, and:
Installed are:
libMesaGLU1-5.0.2-2mdk
libMesaglut3-5.0.2-2mdk

but so is NVIDIA_GLX-5336-6mdk, which I think is the right one...

Follow the how to on www.linuxloader.com. It will get the Nvidia driver installed in about 10 minutes. I prefer to install by the script. The biggest thing is that 10.0 has "Load GLX" commented out. So not only do you have to change the driver to "nvidia" you also have to enable "load glx". Its a step easily missed as its never been commented out before.

RESOLVED!!

Thanks, all!!!

Okay, I uninstalled the Mandrake commercial nvidia RPMs and went back to the nvidia.com script. That, combined with the EDID incantations in XF86Config solves the problems and gives me GLX, etc..

Thank you!

Glad I was able to help. Sometimes the simple way is the best way. The Nvidia script is pretty straight forward.
