Question Mandrake 10 can't create adsl connection

Just installed Mandrake 10 Official and am unable to connect to the internet with an ADSL connection.

Running ifconfig shows that eth0 and lo are up and running, but not ppp0.

Ran adsl-setup, but running adsl-start afterwards times out.

Tried running /sbin/ifup ppp0 but this tells me that the configuration for ppp0 is not found (or something like that)

What to try next? If you need any more info to diagnose, please ask.

does your adsl use PPPo or does it use the standard DHCP. Did you ever use your adsl in windows ? did the adsl auto work in windows ? if it did. You may just have to set your ethernet card to do DHCP. I am not saying this forsure, because I don't know your adsl provider. My adsl provider. After registering my MAC addy for my ethernet card with my ISP (if already registered using windows, no need to register in linux). all I had to do is set my eth0 to dhcp. and all worked fine. if you have more info that would help too. what ISP, what else you tried. Have you tried setting your eth0 to dhcp ? anything else hehe hope we can get this working for you though. oh another thing. what is your eth0 IP address ?

Thanks Phoenix2003, I have been and will continue to monitor that thread but it has not provided the info needed to solve my issue.

nemoswitch... I tried switching eth0 to dhcp with no luck... When I used to use Mandrake 9.0 I was able to connect successfully using Roaring Penguin Gui version but no such luck this time.

Umm... I'm using Sympatico as my ISP... my modem is a Comtrend... what else can i say.. on startup Bringing up eth0 interface fails... modem works fine using Win XP so not a hardware issue

<newb> i don't know how to determine the IP address of eth0, although it tells me the Mac address is 00:0e:a6:55:d9:cd</newb>

Any other suggestions? What other information would help?

<snip> reading your old posts. Did you ever use adsl in windows ? canada adsl, you should not have to log into the internet for adsl. The only time you ever need your Username and password in canada is when you register your ethernet card to the ISP. Oh my. now I forget how to run that adsl config tool. Scratch below if you want. Now reading your first few posts. Below will not apply because the ethernet card is trying to get a IP thru PPOE, so the eth0 will fail, due to a username and pass. Duh. I feel dumb after re reading that. Come chat live with me so we can see what to do about this faster. www.nemoswitch.com. No matter what the outcome is. Positive or negative. I will post the results here so we all can learn from this. If it does work. great. All I can say is. I have not had a person in canada that had to log onto adsl to connect to the internet. If they do that now on sympatico. This is new to me. Scratch this whole post if it has changed. I will edit and delete my post if sympatico now does this.<snip>

hmm. sympatico is almost the same as me. Well I am on telus. But. in canada. telus has sympatico too. They call it telus highspeed here. hmmm. I am in BC. I don't know how accurate this info will be. Being almost the same ISP. type ifconfig. or ifconfig -a. as root. What does your eth0 IP say.

ex.... mine. with xxxx. to hide info.

eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:xx:E2:xx:E6:xx
inet addr:66.183.xxx.xx Bcast:66.183.xx.xx Mask:255.255.224.0
inet6 addr: xxxx::204:xxxx:fe1e:xxxx/xx Scope:Link.

do you have a inet addr: of 10.xx.xxx.xxx . does it start with 10 ?
What does it start with ?

if it Does infact start with 10. then that is your problem right there. if it doesn't. hope we can help you solve this. sympatico where you are may not start with 10.xxx.... and so on. If it starts with something weird like that. Then atleast it will be easier to help ya. It isn't 192.xxx.xxx.xxx is it either ?

Um. I guess one step at a time.

Corrinado, I live in Nova Scotia and use Aliant's high speed ADSL PPPoE system with a Comtrend CT-301 modem and have had no problems connecting to the net with Mandrake 10. Is this what you are using? or is it the older MPowered system? MPowered did not require username/password but the new Aliant High Speed does require you to log on. When I was installing Mandrake I setup the connection as ADSL/PPPoE, entered my username/password and clicked start at boot and it works great. I was having problems with my eth0 failing during bootup, but it didn't hurt anything, but I have since fixed that but if you need more help just ask.

To fix the eth0 failing at bootup, edit /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 and change the BOOTPROTO=dhcp to static. Here is what my file looks like:

DEVICE=eth0
BOOTPROTO=static
NETMASK=255.255.255.0
ONBOOT=yes
WIRELESS_ENC_KEY=""

He's on Aliant high speed. Mpower was never here. The connection is through PPPoE. When I lived in Fredericton, we had static IP's but now its all PPPoE and the bandwidth is cut by 2/3 unless you wanna pay $$$.

Corrinado: Do you happen to have cable at your place? I used to use Aliant high speed when it was called "Vibe" and I now have to use Rogers, as Aliant does not server the outlying areas (Geary, for ex). What I have found is that the speed is noticably faster. I get 3Mbps/384k (if I purchased the modem, I'd get 5M/800k for the same price). If you can't solve your connection problem, you might wanna use cable, as its DHCP.

To find your IP address, you'd (as root) type "ifconfig". If your NIC is up, it'll show you the IP. I had a problem with my Lynksis NIC module being loaded at boot when I was using RC2 (tulip module). Perhaps you're a victim of the hotplugging problem I was experiencing. When you type lsmod, is the module of your ethernet card listed among the modules?

well, if i remember correctly, mandrake 10 uses 2.6, and i cant get my nic to work under 2.6 either, both of ours are using the tulip driver, which for some reason has its own section in the kernel seperate from the pci NICs, maybe that has something to do with it?
