Mandrake 10.1 install

I have the cd's to install 10.1 Official but would like to find a step by step how-to. I saw one on the web but can't find it again. I understand there's kernel choices and "Xorg" which I'm not familiar with. Also, is it significantly better than 9.2? Thanks.

The default is xorg and 2.6.8.1 kernel, so you don't really need to make any choices.

The install is straight forward, it starts with a few questions about language and location (for kb map too) then parrtition, for which there is a fully auto use-the-full-drive option. Then on to packages...

What you will see is a list of different broad categories (and a box at the bottom for individual package selection). Just check what you think you need. A working kde desktop is the default. You can always install missed items later from drakconf ("configure your computer").

After the package install you set the root password, add users, then you can configure stuff. Make sure you configure the graphics environment. The rest you can do later if you need to, I would set the location and stuff too, then if you use an ntp server the time will be right.

Thanks for the reply. So how would you rate it with 9.2? Just read at "Mandrakeusers.org" that you can "upgrade" from 9.2 to 10.1. Is it better to "install"?

Upgrading works fine, but I usually urge people who can afford to have a clean install to do it that way because it can save you from potential problems.

I always recommend a clean install. That way I don't have to mess with anything that doesn't like the upgrade, or any other upgrade issues.
