Mandrake 10.0 Xfree error??
 

Hi,

Sorry for yet another kinda noob question but this has got me buggered.
I've tried loadsa Linux versions over past year or so, but I've always bin drawn back to Mandrake eventually.

I recently downloaded 10.0 official and tried to install. I checked the md5sums and they seemed clear before burning, n the burns themselves went fine.

However, when I started t install there were 2 files that it couldn't copy, but asked if I wanted to continue anyway. I can't remember these filenames, but if they're important I can try to reinstall again to get them.

The install carrie don, n did seem to go fine. I got to the config section and was told that it couldn't install my speedtouch adsl 330 modem because it needed a kernel 2.4 or higher for the drivers to work, I thought mandrake 10.0 had kernel 2.6, and I don't remember having a choice to install with 2.4 instead?

Anyway, thats another problem. The main problem I'm having is when it came to configuring the graphics. I have the Radeon 9500 Pro card. I choose the driver that was already selected for me, the Radeon (lcrx, or something similar), and it asks if Iwant to enable hardware acceleration. When I choose yes it tries the test, goes black with the cursor line flashing at the top of my screen, then returns an error saying it coulnd' open 'font main' and to try changing my settings.

I tried with 3d acceleration, but the same, and I tried with all other radeon drivers, but still the same.

When I rrebooted my pc anyway, I came to the basic terminal linux asking me to login, I did this, as root jus to b certain, and tried to launch kde, but it tried loading, then returned an error 'Xinit command not found'??

This is as far as i can get.

Is this a problem heard of before, or does anyone know the solution?

ATI cards can be a pain to set up. I never use the drivers that come with any OS, including Mandrake.

Get the driver from ATI and follow their directions and you should be able get the card working.

I bought the MDK Powerpack edition, and it istalled a friend's ATI card automagically. There are advantages to having the commercial version.

I know this post is old, but anyway...
Try using the 'vesa' driver in the config file. This is only a generic driver, but it might be good for now unless you do a lot of gaming.
ATI is known for having bad Linux drivers. However, I just bought a Nvidia FX5500, and had a lot of problems with this to....

If you are still having problems, it would be nice if you could post your config file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf). Your log file will also give you some hints at what the problem might be (/var/log/Xorg.0.log).

I gotta defend ATI somewhat. I haven't had all the different models but Linux has allways worked with my ATI cards from back in 1994 when windows didn't know what a mach64 card was, to the ATI AIW 9000 card I'm running now. I've never had to use drivers other than what came with Mandrake (or distro I used at the time).
