Mandrake 10.0 on a dual processor machine..

hello everyone,
I have a question here. I have a dual processor machine Xeon(Pentium -II 450 Mhz). I am trying to boot it with Mandrake 10.0 and it gets stuck every time at "Uncompressing Linux...OK,booting the kernel". It gets stuck up here.It does not go further for any installation.

The machine I have here is a Dell Precison Workstation. Its a dual processor machine with a 13 GB hard drive and 256 MB RAM. Though the CD ROM i m using is SCSI. I dont think that SCSI cd rom is a problem, because it is detecting the installation media and it stuck at "uncompressing Linux". The same problem is with Knoppix 3.4 , a debian based distribution, it gets stuck with the same message.

Though I have installed Red Hat 8.0 and to my wonder, it did get installed with an SMP kernel version and normal kernel version. I have also installed XP and it s working fine. Ofcourse, I have dual booted both of the OS.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thank you
Ommy

Try disabling all power management options in the bios.

Hi

I'm after an answer for that question for some time now.

I'm using Mdk 10.0 in a dual P III 700 Mhz, that boots Linux, Win98 and Win2K.

Lilo generated several choices for linux, including 3 entries referring smp : one specific to PIII, other for i686 and a generic smp.

All these have differences but none can boot to the end. They can go from a frozen black screen after kernel decompression, to the acceptance of user password and a blue screen with a stopped watch.

Login with normal Linux works well but Control Centre only reports one processor.

I asked Mandrake if Powerpack and/or their book could give me an answer, as the download version has no support from them, and they said that if I install a "smp kernel" it is supposed to work fine.

I have some atempts in forums with no answers.

Can someone, please, give some help on this?

Doesn't the normal installation install the appropriate Kernel files, besides creating the Lilo entries?

How can we overcome this (at newbie level explanation), pls?

maybe many Linux distros cannot support dual processors?

Check around and see if there are distros that can support dual processors.

I'll edit this post accordingly

Hi, tks

Mandrake 10.0 is said to support the configuration, and I had it in an older version already.

It is not hardware problem because Win2k uses both processors.

Not a chance.

i'm not an expert at this, but from everything i'm reading, you need to install a smp kernel to make it work properly. set up some contrib (& if you're a bit daring) cooker sources, then urpmi kernel & choose an smp version (2.6.3-13 is the latest, AFAIK). if you want more detailed info, use MCC->software installer->type kernel in the search & get it that way. get the sources to mathc that kernel, too.

Hi
Tks atish1000c, I will give it a try (maybe this evening).

My major doubt was the reason why Lilo built 3 entries and they don't deliver the goods, but looking at Cont.Cent. Lilo seems to make the same kind of call as for the normal (1CPU) start, besides it shall not be that easy to explain as this last choice works fine.
