Mageia 1 has been released.

Now that Mageia (a community fork of Mandriva) has released its first edition (Mageia 1), will Linux Questions open a forum for it, or will Mageia questions reside in the Mandriva forum?

Now that the first edition has been released, IMO, the distribution should get a forum on LQ.

Mageia has its won forum right now. See this link -->https://forums.mageia.org/en/

I saw some discussion on mandirviausers.org , it seems the mageia has decided to create their own forum.

Possibly Jeremy will give us a comment on LQ's intentions.

the usual story is that a distro will get it's own forum when there is enough discussion about it

Hi, I've installed Mageia1 and I'm loving it. Fresh new look, and same old stability with more.

I upgraded my hardware at the same time, and I managed to get some bad memory, or This mobo can't handle 16Gb ram.

Any-how, it's working nice and zippy with just 8Gb ram.

After 3 weeks, I still have my hair....lol!

Cheers, Glenn

Welcome aboard with Mageia, Glenn! I am also having a very good experience with it, so there may be little need for a Mageia forum here on LQ after all. I subscribe to the Mageia-dev ML, and it looks as if the updating system should soon become active, so watch for your mgaonline update notifications. There is also discussion about adding Firefox5 to the updates repo. At this rate, it will not be long before this new community stops with the baby steps, and really takes flight. I think they have made a very good start with Mageia 1.

I agree.

The ram seemed my only problem, .

I've had updates a few times already.

I might be sinning, but I've used some Mandy2010.1/2/cooker(2011) packages to get my favourite programs installed. (Which I haven't finished yet)

Like songwrite2, requires lilypond.

All's good right now.

Thanks ernie.

I installed Mageia the day it was released. It's great. I've had no issues. Very stable and speedy. No updates, yet; but, they're coming. I see a great future for Mageia.

I have installed Mageia 1 on my main system. It is now my backup system, Slackware 13.37 being my main system.

I tried the upgrade several weeks ago. That failed because I had the latest updates on Mandriva, and some packages would not install. This week I got some things working on Slack, so I stuck the DVD in, and formated the root partition and installed.

The main install went well enough. However, when I was configuring my video card, the configuration program blew up, leaving we with an incomplete install. I got out of that by re-booting, and selecting upgrade. That by-passed the installation of all the packages, and took me back to configuration. This time I left the video alone, and completed the install.

Most things worked out of the box. Video, sound and my ethernet card.

Some surprises. Cups was not installed by default. I could not find a decent text editor, other than vim. I installed gedit.

Since this is a dual boot linux system, I was surprised to find out grub did not pick up the installation of Slack on my second disk. I had to manually edit manu.lst to add a boot option for Slack. Not a big deal, but it was not detected.

I installed Webmin. I have not found a way to add modules not included with the mag package for webmin. I tried to install the modules for samba and swat from www.webmin.com without success.

Also to my surprise, I can not su to root in a konsole. I have set root password, and it works for accessing MCC. I can get root access in MCC, but that is a pain. Don't know yet if this has something to do with the security settings, or some other issue.

Beyond those minor problems, this distro seems fast enough. MCC is just like it was in Mandy.

So for me its two thumbs up to Mageia, thank-you for a very good first release.

Cliff,

Don't forget to send bug reports to Mageia Bugzilla. You will help to make Mageia a better distribution, and your issues may soon be fixed for you.

Hello friends. The question of the million dollars with Mageia since the begining: How can I install the Emerald Theme Manager and Compiz Fusion Icon if that ain't into the repos and when I want to install the packages I have troubles with a lot of dependencies and at the end it doesn't work anyway!!!
Any help you can give is all welcome even if it's not good news.

GlennsPref 07-03-2011 10:10 PM

Hi, you could try and install emerald from Mandriva 2010.2 repos.
Compiz is available from mga repos.

Personally I just use kwin, and nolonger use compiz and emerald themes.

Cheers Glenn
