Logitech C200 webcam + Skype

:)Hi There - wonder if someone can point me in
the right direction on these couple of issues
I have.

Using Mandriva 2009 (Free)

I have installed the Logitech C200 webcam and it
does work with 'Cheese'. But! - I have to log out
and then log back in for it to work.

Anyone know how I can get this to load up witout
having to log out/in.

Although the webcam will work with 'Cheese', after
logging out and then back in, the webcam will not
work in Skype (latest Beta version for Linux).

I did think maybe it could be something to do with
permissions, but have not found anyway to prove that
this is the case. Anyone have any ideas how to get
Skype video started please?

Any help also on this would be much appreciated.

Thanks to all for looking. ;)

The potential issues are too broad to give definitive answer to the question with the information provided.

I can tell you that logout restarts the Xorg X server so it sounds like there could be a problem getting the v4l module to load the first time. The /var/log/Xorg.0.log file should have info in it for that. ...

One issue here is the age of the distro. Mandriva 2010.0 and 2010.1(the most recent) "Free" are both available as downloads. I will suggest that you get one of those and make a clean, fresh install.

... You might try getting a 2010.1(Spring) "One" version and using it to see if the webcam and Skype work better. The download will take less time since the "One" versions fit onto a CD and as 'Live' (run from the CD) versions they do not have to be installed to a hard disk. I have not tried Skype or a webcam from a 'One' but last time I used a One version, peripherals were accessible and worked normally.

I have the same Web cam here, and it works out of the box in Kopete. I can not say why it would not work in Skype because I do not use it (Skype). You would do well to follow rjcooks recommendation, and install Mandriva 2010.1 (Spring) as a fresh install, then see how things work the Web cam and Skype. You may also want to check the Skype Web site to see if there are any known issues with your Web cam.

HTH,

Hi Guys - Thanks rjcooks and ernie for your input.

Sorry I have not replied sooner, but have been away
for a few days break.

All copied on your advice on getting a new upgrade
to Mandriva. Will look into that as soon as poss.

Have found that the Logitech C200 webcam does work
for me in Kopete, but still not going in Skype.
So think that your suggestion to upgrade is the
way to go.

Again, many thanks for your interest and input.
