login screen will not allow root login

I reinstalled Mandrake 9.2 yesterday, and everything went smoothly except that the loging splash has changed. Instead of having the users on the left and two boxes on the right to type in user and password, it only gives me a password box and the users above it. It thus does not give any way to log in as root.

Any idea how to fix?

That is by design and the original install of 9.2 should of been the same. Its Mandrake's way of say do not login to x as root for security reasons.

Login as a user and use the control center to add root.
