When I was using Mandrake 10.1, I didn't have an issue with the login prompt - it had all the little pictures of the users, and allowed me to choose my window manager.
I updated to Mandriva 2006 free using the 2006 DVD, and the login prompt is now just a generic x86 text login prompt that allows me to input my username and password only. I can't select my windowmanager, and I'm stuck using KDE instead of my beloved FluxBox.
If you have "graphical login" selected you will see this screen: http://shots.osdir.com/slideshows/472/27.gif In the bottom left corner, click on "session type". If fluxbox is not listed, simply install it with urpmi. I only have kde and icewm by default, but fluxbox is available via urpmi.
If this is not the login window you see, open mcc and in the "boot" tab open "autologin" and select both "launch the graphical environment when your system starts" and "no, I do not want autologin". After you install fluxbox, if you want to boot straight into fluxbox, choose "launch the graphical environment when your system starts" and "yes, I want autologin with this (user, desktop)" and the greyed out boxes for the default user and the default desktop choices become available.
Edit: Hey, a neighbour. First time I have noticed someone in my city on here.
Yeah man, I just noticed that you're from London, slick!
Ok, I did what you said, but when I opened mcc and went to change the autologin thing, the settings you suggested were already selected.
To get an idea of what my login thing looks like, I did a google search.

My login screen looks almost identical to that (the exceptions being the colour scheme and the hostname)
