Log on as Root, or switch to Root, in MDK 9.1 - KDE 3.1.0

Actually, I want to run netconf to configure eth0 so that MDK and the rest of the network can find each other.

Netconf requires that I run as Root. Fair enough. However, the error message that reminds me to be Root does not offer the option of switching to Root (as do many other programs that require Root for access).

The logon screen does not offer the option of logging on as root.

If I use the superuser terminal, I can switch to Root. However, running linuxconf or netconf gives the following error:
Error message from remadmin : Xlib: connection to "0.0" refused by server
Error message from remadmin : Xlib: no protocol specified
Error message from remadmin : Xlib:
Error message from remadmin : Xlib:
Error message from remadmin : Xlib: Gtk-WARMING **: cannot open display :0.

Questions:
1. given all these impediments, how do I use Root in KDE?
2. how do I configure my network card?

And as a rhetorical question, why didn't I get options to do this stuff - and a lot more - when installing MDK 9.1 with KDE 3.1.0? I didn't have troubles like this installing MDK 8.1 or any of the recent Red Hats that I've installed.

Before running the netconf command allow anyone on the computer to access your X server:
xhost +localhost

I wouldn't advise logging in as Root user for the whole session - you can normally use su for anything - however :

K
Configuration
KDE Control Centre
System
Login Manager
Aministrator mode butoon - type root password
Users tab
Uncheck the cross next to Root user, in "hidden users"
apply

Log out
Log in

Youll now be able to login as Root user
