Loading Screensaver problem

I have followed some of the apparent fixes to try and correct my KDE screensaver problem and nothing works. I tried doing an update or bug fix using my control center but it says nothing new is found to be up dated.

For the first time, I was able to type "xscreensaver" in my run command and it opened up the settings for the first time, and I was able to see and preview the many screensavers, but I still could not get them to work. In previous attempts, I would type in the word "xscreensaver", and nothing would ever happen, or on several occasions it would open for 2 seconds and it would disappear.

In other words, I could never see them or preview them.

I tried to reopen my xscreensaver (again) using my "run" command and it never opens. Don't know why.

Any suggestions? My screensaver never works and I get a black screen when PC is idle for 5 minutes. No screensaver at all.

I have already tried to go to my "look and feel" in screensavers control, but it is all blank, nothing to add, scroll or choose from.

I have mandrake 9.2, any suggestions?

You can add a lot of screensavers from 9.2.

Think is Kdelook package or something similar.

I have yet to find a solution for making my screensaver work.

If I press my Alt F2 key a type "xcreensaver" sometimes it will open up my settings, but if I log out, I can never reopen it. Every other time or so if I reboot I can open it using my Alt F2 run command, but I can never ever get my screen saver to work.

Any suggestions out there?

Solutions to screensaver problem???

I may have solved a simple/stupid solution to my screensaver problem(s), it sounds stupid, but here it goes.

Here is what was happening. I originally tried to install my screensaver file off my Mandrake CD rom and I could never see them appear within my screensaver console.

In other words, there was nothing to choose from.

If I type the word "xscreensaver" in my run command console, it would open up my settings and I could watch the several previews of my screensavers, but I never could get it to work automatically. Approximately 100 or so different screensaver previews.

When my screen would go idle, for 5 minutes or so, the screen saver would always just go black (no screensaver) and I never really understood why. Well, I presumed the reason being is none were ever selected, because there were none to choose from inside the screensaver console.

Then something occurred to me, I typed the word "screensaver" in my run command box and I unchecked the screensaver box. Obviously if there are no screen savers to choose from from my screensaver command center, and the preveiw was black, then my screensaver would only run in black.

I then typed "xscreensaver" in my run command (Alt F2) box and scrolled down to Random Screen Saver and it automatically checks nearly all of the screensavers there on its own.

I minimized my screensaver preference box and waited 5 minutes or so and the screensaver started to work for the first time.

I know it sounds like some sort of lame solution to a fix, but now my screensaver works, whereas in the past it never did work, well, let me rephrase this, it worked only in black.

Same problem on Knoppix HD install

Hi all!

I have the same problem, except xscreensaver doesn't start at all on my system. When I go into the KDE Control Center>Appearance and Themes>Screensaver, select XScreensaver, then click Setup, I get the following error message:

Quote:

Warning:

xscreensaver-demo is running as user "root" on host "%hostname%"
But the xscreensaver is managing display ":0.0"
is running as user "daemon" on host "%hostname%"

Since they are different users, they won't be reading/writing the same ~/.xscreensaver file, so xscreensaver-demo isn't going to work right.

You should either re-run xscreensaver-demo as "daemon", or re-run xscreensaver as "root".

Restart the xscreensaver daemon now?

Cancel OK
No matter if I restart it or not, it will not run when the specified time expires.

Does anyone have any idea how I can get this running on my system?

Thanks for your time!

Re: Same problem on Knoppix HD install

2 possible solutions:

1) Open up xsreensavers using the run command and click on settings. Reduce the window of the screensaver to bottom of the screen. Make sure you uncheck the screensaver in your Look in Feel command center of KDE. Wait and screensaver should run automatically.

2) Second solution is to delete mandrake 9.2 and install mandrake 10.0.

In the opinion of many, Mandrake 9.2 was released too soon. I really love Mandrake 10.0. I like it better than Windows XP.

Thanks for the reply, but neither of these will work for my situation:

When I try your first suggestion to run xscreensaver from the application launcher, xscreensaver never launches.

I do not want to install Mandrake 10.0 as I am running an older laptop that doesn't react too well to larger images. I need a small image in order to get any kind of performance out of my system. This is why I have chosen Knoppix HD install: it has almost all the features I want, and performs well on my hardware.

While typing this reply, I thought I would try uninstalling/reinstalling to see if this would make any difference. If it doesn't, I think I will install Knoppix 3.4 to see if this makes a difference.

Thanks again for your reply!

Re: Same problem on Knoppix HD install

Also you may want to try to un-install xscreensave and then try to reinstalling it.
