Linux Mandrake 9.2

well i did it!!! i am now using mandrake 9.2 anyhow i have come up with a few questions...

1. how do i "install" mozilla firefox? i donloaded it and i am using it, but when i click on links and stuff it loads Konquoer(or what ever it is) how do i make firefox my default browser... i selected that option in the options in firefox, but it still doenst load as default, and how do i add it to the "start" menue and the same for thundrbird

2. what do i use for a IM program.. i see that AIM now makes a program for Linux, but it looks REALLY privative, and its a beta.. i used to use AIM and ICQ, what are my options now?

3. do i have to worry about anti virus and firewalls? i dont have the currant firewall turned on, should it be...

i am sure i have more but ill start there... thanks guys...

1. Assuming you have a tar file for Firefox go a terminal window and type 'tar -zxpvf nameoffile.tar.gz' the nameoffile.tar.gz being the file you downloaded. It will untar the file, and you can go to the directory and find the shell script that is titled "firefox" and that will open up an install of firefox, and you will be able to use the browser.

2. I use gaim, you can find it at http://gaim.sourceforge.net/ Get the tar file and follow the same command to untar the file "tar -zxpvf nameoffile.tar.gz". However, you will have to then CD into the director "cd gaimdirectory" (gaimdirectory being the directory that the files untarred in). Assuming then you have all the right packages in order to install from source do "./configure" it will take a minute or so do run through its processes then send the "make" command. After that "su" to root, that is by typing "su" it will ask for the root password, type that in and then type "make install".

3. Anti-virus software I don't see it being needed, I don't use it. The firewalls, you might consider turning it on, but to be honest I don't have the built in firewall software on with SuSe.

I hope this helps some.

What? Are you done with Mandrake already and going to something else? Why? My advice to you, and this I learned after coming here and I kept asking and asking for help, I soon learned to attempt first to try to figure things out as best as possible.

Not sure what service you are using, so I am not sure which account to add you on GAIM. But with AIM and Yahoo my screenname is KD5OWO
