So far I've tried everything that's been suggested to no avail. This includes:
1. Editing the xorg.conf file to try to set a refresh rate
2. Using xorgcfg (Thanks for the suggestion but no luck)
3. Using xvidtune (something I saw when doing a Google search) No luck. This even said that the chip is not "tuneable" (if that's a word.)
I am resigning myself to the fact that this chipset is stuck in 800x600 permenantly. I may try the Intel driver update that I mentioned at the start of this thread but I have read other peoples' stories where they wer unable to even install the driver.
Thank you to everyone for their help. I do appreciate it.
I tried the install of the Intel graphics driver from their site. Not sure if it went correctly or not. The initial message I got was the it was installed but not configured correctly. Tried to re-install but it said it was already installed.
Followed the instructions from their website and now I am offered the option of "1024x768" resolution. I still only have a refresh rate of "0" which I don't understand.
This issue I have is that when I select 1024x768 and restart X, it seems that the computer, instead of making the resolution smaller, is thinking that the screen went from a 17" monitor to a 14" monitor giving me less screen space. I don't know how else to explain this but at 1024x768 resolution I have to scroll around my desktop because it doesn't fit entirely in the screen.
Oh boy, ok, sorry if you are pissed, but I faced the same thing with SuSE too. There was a tool(I forget its name) which can be used to correct this. I dont know if it is available only in Suse. IŽll describe it so maybe somebody can name it.It obviously has X in its name, there are four directional arrows which are used to change the position of the display in the monitor(similar to the physical buttons found in the monitor). On another tab there is screen resize(this too is similar to the monitor expand and contract buttons). Believe me this doesnŽt sound like the right tool, but this is what reduced my screen size(i.e. the scrolling stuff stopped).
P.s.: There is a picture of tux(and that reminds me is it SaX?, iŽm sure it is something like that)
And I am really sorry, for everything you say, i seem to say šI experienced that with SuSEš.
Being ticked is the furthest thing from my mind. I'm just trying different things and seeiing if I can get this to work.
Like I said, I'll keep working it and see what happens. I keep getting this feeling that I'm sooooooooooooo close to cracking this nut that it's unreal. I'll see what I can find about resizing the screen.
For anyone who may read this again. In an earlier thread I had someone look at my xorg.conf file and one of the things I was told was to add a line like this:
ViewPort 0 0
In all the stuf I have checked, I have found one oddity. When I log in to root and run xorgcfg, I checked the display settings in Expert Mode and all depth settings had a ViewPort of -1 -1. I tried to [vi /etc/X11/xorg.conf] and set the ViewPorts to -1 -1 and then tried to restart X. All I got was an error.
I've not really used xorgcfg before so I'm not sure if it would be wise to try to change the ViewPorts in this program to match the ViewPorts in xorg.conf. Anyone with ideas on this?
Also, in xorgcfg when I check the Modelines all I get is 640x480 and 800x600. I can't add 1024x768 but I can select 1024x768 in "Screen resize and rotate" on my desktop. This just brings up the screen being larger than the display.
